On February 7, 1984, Bruce McCandless II did something no human had ever done before — he cut the cord.
Using a nitrogen-propelled backpack called the Manned Maneuvering Unit, McCandless floated 320 feet away from Space Shuttle Challenger with absolutely nothing connecting him to the spacecraft. No tether. No rope. No safety line. Just a jetpack, two hand controllers, and the void of space stretching in every direction.
He became the first human satellite.
The MMU worked by firing small bursts of nitrogen gas — 24 thrusters in total — allowing McCandless to move in any direction with precision. Despite traveling at 17,500 miles per hour alongside the shuttle in orbit, he felt no sense of speed. Only silence. Until he looked down and recognized what was beneath his feet.
"Looks like Florida. It is Florida!" he said.
The spacewalk lasted 6 hours and 17 minutes. The photo taken that day became one of the most iconic images in the history of human spaceflight — a lone figure in white, suspended above a curving blue Earth, anonymous behind a gold visor.
McCandless later said his anonymity was the point. "I have the sun visor down, so you can't see my face. It could be anybody in there. It's a representation not of Bruce McCandless, but of mankind."
He was right. That photo isn't about one astronaut. It's about what humans are capable of when they decide to let go.
