What an emotional debut it was for Eliezer Alfonzo on Sunday.

It was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of the Dodgers catcher’s career. After all, Alfonzo has been playing in the minor leagues since 2017, and memories like these are supposed to be shared with family members and loved ones.

Instead, it was a bittersweet affair for Alfonzo, whose sister Eliana, and stepmother Patricia, were among the victims of the devastating earthquakes that hit Venezuela last June 24.

"EyP RIP" was written near the bill of Alfonzo’s cap. He also received a heartwarming standing ovation from the Dodger faithful during their game against the Padres.

"I felt very emotional and very happy when I heard my name announced, when I took my first turn to bat, to feel the support from the fans,” said Alfonzo in Spanish.

"It's something I appreciated very much and something I'll always keep in my heart."
