If you found this years Open HSPU standards to be rather frustrating, you certainly aren’t alone. Many athletes are sharing the same sentiments.

However, this is just a great reminder of why every year, the Open is a great test for all of us. Every year, you’re presented with new challenges which will ultimately inspire you to become better athletes. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve participated in the scaled or RX division. We can all agree that it will motivate athletes to want more— to be stronger, faster, fitter, and more skillful.

No one cares about what you’re good at. How are you to become better if you only do things you’re good at? Find your weaknesses, address them, and then retest it in the next season! That’s what it’s all about!

Sit tight folks! We’ve got one week left, and I’m sure it’ll be a hell of a finisher for the open season this year.

I must admit after I measured for my first attempt at 18.4 and my feet didn’t even reach the line when I was fresh I was frustrated. Then just out of curiosity I measured using last year standards. I was pi**ed to find out that last year standards and this year standards are off by 3 inches exactly. After an almost 6 minute Diane on my first attempt I was doing a lot of bitching.

After a day of observing others and seeing that I was not the only one having this problem I came to realize. The true problem was not the new standard it was the old standard.

The new standard forces me to do several things that I was doing wrong previously.

Three ways this new standard will make all of us better for next year. Most likely a combination of all 3.

1. Your hands were too wide because of poor shoulder mobility.
2. Too far off the wall because your erratic kipp always makes you fall.
3. Over extended spine/ closed hips, could be weak midline or tight shoulders.

None of those things are Castro’s fault. They are my fault and you and your coaches fault.
Let’s stop being baby’s and complaining when someone asks us to step our game up.

Trojan Athletics will be hosting a 6-week Raw Strength Program. Whether you are a CrossFitter wanting to improve your strength, or a beginner wanting to learn the basics of building strength, this program is for you!
We will be spending 6 weeks developing technique and capacity in both Powerlifting (Squat, Bench, Deadlift) and Strongman (Yoke, Stones, Logs, etc.). This program will run 3x a week for 6 weeks!

Registration is live!!! Trojan Weightlifting is proud to announce that we will be hosting a meet, DTLA Halloween Classic 2017, at the end of October. This is a sanctioned meet that is open to weightlifters of all levels. This meet will also be the last chance to qualify for the American Open Finals in Anaheim.

USAW rules and regulations will apply.

Requirements: Active USAW Membership

Awards: Medals for the top 3 lifters in each weight class. Sinclair awards for the Top Male and Top Female lifter. All athletes will receive a DTLA Halloween Classic 2017 T-shirt.
Facility: We are located in downtown Los Angeles, Arts District. We have a 7,000 sqft facility with a private parking lot adjacent to the gym. Plenty of platforms to warm up on, and a competition platform as well. Ample space for spectators!
