May is Mental Health Awareness Month! The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges to students, educators, and parents. Children already coping with mental health issues have been especially vulnerable to the changes. Taking steps to support students is essential during this challenging time. For us at The Help Group, that means more than making sure they are keeping up with their academics and score well on standardized tests. We are as concerned about the social, emotional, and mental health needs of students in our community. Watch these free live webcasts titled, “Addressing The Mental Health Needs of Young People” where we'll hear from experts on how to address the mental health needs of young people during the COVID-19 pandemic. thehelpgroup.org/mental-health-awareness-month/

Many parents may not fully understand why their child is struggling in school or what support is needed for them to reach their full potential. A more comprehensive evaluation such as a neuropsychological assessment can help parents better understand why a child is struggling, create a profile of a child’s unique profile, including strengths and weaknesses, and outline a plan for addressing areas of struggle. Join us for this free live webcast to learn more with guest experts! RSVP: https://thg-maywebcast.eventbrite.com

We know that this year has been a difficult one. While the pandemic and virtual programming threw many challenges to KLM and The Help Group, we are proud of what we have been able to maintain and offer during this time and hope that they have been a resource and support for you and your family.

Given the many challenges of ensuring safety for our young people and staff, we have decided that we will not be offering any in-person/virtual classes or camps this spring and summer. Instead, we'll be taking this time to focus on The Help Group schools' return to campus plans for our Help Group schools. This was a difficult decision for us all, but our goal is to safely resume in-person programming again in the fall.

Our Parent Support and Village Glen Social Skills groups will be continuing virtually. To learn more, reach out to [email protected] or visit www.kidslikemela.org.

Dr. Jason Bolton from The Help Group and Dr. Karen Wilson from Child Nexus agree that education interventions and support should focus on a student’s strengths rather than their deficits. By capitalizing on a student’s strengths, they can thrive and are far more engaged in their learning.
