At the beginning of 2020 I was full steam ahead on building a business focused on teaching people how to have an impact in social settings.

By March, Corona eliminated social gatherings around the world and made my materials pretty irrelevant in our new way of life.

It’s safe to say I went into lockdown with my inner critic. I agonized over the fact I was starting a business in a pandemic then wallowed in guilt that I wasn’t appreciating being safe and healthy.

In between feeling sorry for myself, I got on zoom calls with other people navigating the unexpected. Despite the circumstances, we empowered each other to change our frame of mind and turn our obstacles into opportunities. With each small success I had getting back into my business, my inner critic became quieter.

While my mission still helps you create an impact with others, we are going to start with making an impact within.

(Anyone else go down a tik tok rabbit hole in quarantine? 😂)

This Christmas, my family went on a cruise together. We had some great family bonding moments... like enjoying dinner together every night, disco dancing and meeting strangers. I met Maranna & Mackenzie (pictured above) through our parents having a Hello Stranger moment. From spontaneous breakfast gatherings to in depth life purpose conversations, our families went from strangers to instant friends.

They even got me a Christmas gift “Talking to Strangers” by

It still amazes me the incredible experiences created by a simple hello.

I received the most thoughtful present from my wonderful friends. Amelia was by my side cheering for Nick, our friends and strangers at the Gate River Run. When the race was over I misplaced my sign and thought it was gone forever. Nick and Amelia had the sign the whole time and had it stored away to give it to me for Christmas. I am absolutely delighted to have it back and to hang it in my office.

In the first week of January this year, I bought a map of the world and hung it on the most visible wall in my home. I took a step back to take it in and declared “I’m going to add more pins to this map in 2019!”

I was fortunate to have a job that I absolutely loved and that allowed me to travel each week. But with a busy work schedule, I wasn’t able to explore as I wanted. Each time I boarded the plane, I had imagined jetting off to an new destination with the only requirement of me being discovery.

3 months later, my dream job was eliminated and I was left with time. A lot of it. While I was devastated to be closing a chapter that was an important part of my life, excitement washed over me as I began to realize my goal was within my reach.

My new found freedom started on a Tuesday and by Saturday I was on my first adventure.

I am saying yes to more of life’s opportunities and meeting some incredible people along the way.

I believe one of the reasons I find it so easy to strike up a conversation with a stranger is thanks to this woman. My mom is a vibrant, outgoing and courageous woman that will speak to everyone around her. (Whether they want her to or not 😂) As a teenager this was the cause of endless embarrassing moments. As an adult, I have taken on the same trait and it is the reason I have some of the most incredible friendships.

When I told my mom I wanted to travel for this project, she told me to go for it.... on the condition she hears from me often to know I’m safe.

Esther’s advice to Strangers:
See the world because it will teach you more than any classroom.
