Amy Harkins, former FLAG German student and Franklin Elementary School alumna, returned to Franklin Elementary School on April 11, 2022 to share her love of Irish dance with the students and to promote Franklin's Annual Dance-a-Thon.

Amy talked about the rich heritage of Irish dance, including the music, shoes and costumes and why the dancers traditionally keep their hands to their sides.

Amy said there were two possible theories. One, that during the occupation of the British in Ireland, the Irish dancers were invited/ordered to dance before the Queen of England and out of a silent rebellion, they danced with their hands pinned to their sides. Another is that when British troops ruled over Ireland, they banned dancing in the pubs and patrolled outside the pubs to enforce the rule. However, if the guards peered through the windows, they could not see that waist down, the townspeople were actually dancing with their hands to their sides.

Amy inspired the students with her dancing and literally leaped into the air above them. Amy studies dance at Celtic Irish Dance Academy in Burbank and is competing at the North American Championships in Montreal in July, 2022.

What a fantastic week for these two hard working girls. They both danced amazing at the 50th World Irish Dance Championships and took to the world stage like the champs they are. Next stop Nationals
