Must we then conclude that in the developed countries the chances of Gandhi and of the movements inspired by him and his example are so small, if not non-existent?
.
No! Time is working for Gandhi. Soon, he will be acknowledged as a prophet. And here are the main reasons why. Ultimately, man will manage to convince himself of the absurdity of war. World wars, since the discovery of nuclear energy, are plain su***de. Local wars—Vietnam is there to prove it—take just as heavy a toll in human lives, in money and in prestige as world wars.
.
Everywhere, as well as an inert majority and an extreme left and extreme right who clash with one another in a shifting balance of violence and hatred, there are minorities who are well aware that violence is not the real answer to violence; that, if violence is met by violence, the world will fall into a spiral of violence; that the only true answer to violence is to have the courage to face the injustices which constitute violence No. 1.
.
The privileged and the authorities will come to understand that common sense obliges one to choose between bloody and armed violence, on the one hand, and on the other the violence of the peaceful: liberating moral pressure.
.
To those who think that the authorities and the privileged will never yield to the violence of the peaceful—which will not be satisfied with minor reforms, but demands definite changes in unjust and inhuman structures—it suffices to recall that their children are very often on the side of justice and that these young people are a powerful voice in support of the demand for a more united and human world.

“The ideal exercise should develop not only the limbs, muscles, and internal organs of the body, but should also promote mental and spiritual development. To make such a physical exercise universally popular and acceptable there should be no necessity for apparatus or appliances; it should be easy to do; is should take a short time to perform; it should be of such a nature as to enable it to be carried out anywhere and by anybody; and should not necessitate a partner of companion. Surya Namaskars fulfill all these requirements.”

My general mood of late is best expressed by my sidekick, Smoky. Everyday after breakfast he sneaks into the bedroom and burrows deep underneath the covers to await dinner. Someone wake me when it's safe to come out.

Yoga Sūtra III.34
.
हृदये चित्तसंवित् ।।३४।।
From contemplation on the heart comes profound understanding of the mind.
.
“In the Buddhist tradition, moral sensibilities arise via two avenues. The first, referred to as 'apatrapā,' is practiced when others tell one to perform specific correct behaviors. The second, known as hrī, arises from the heart. One has learned and interiorized the path of making the correct choice. Rather than being imposed externally, this higher form of moral life spontaneously arises from within oneself.
.
The cultivation of spiritual practice or sādhana begins with instruction from someone whom one respects and trusts. This person has dedicated herself or himself to giving advice to others based on personal experience. However, the actual experience of that person, that teacher, is far less important than the willingness of the sādhaka or spiritual practitioner to enter her or his own path. By taking the tools offered by a teacher, one takes the opportunity to reform, to remold, to refashion oneself.“

"Art does not incite. To me, art has to do with imagination. Imagination makes possible everything we do as human beings. We can picture all the possibilities and try to realize it in practice.
What nourishes the imagination? It is actually the arts, the songs, the culture. The problem with repressive regimes is that they like to starve the imagination. They don’t want you to think or imagine the possibilities of a different future. They want you to think this is the best of all possible worlds, like that character in Voltaire’s Candide, 'Oh! This is the best of all possible worlds!' Slave-owning institutions used to argue that this is the best of all possible worlds."

"I believe that I have rendered a service to India and England by showing in non-co-operation the way out of the unnatural state in which both are living. In my opinion, non-co-operation with evil is as much a duty as is co-operation with good. But in the past, non-co-operation has been deliberately expressed in violence to the evil-doer. I am endeavoring to show to my countrymen that violent non-co-operation only multiplies evil, and that as evil can only be sustained by violence, withdrawal of support of evil requires complete abstention from violence. Non-violence implies voluntary submission to the penalty for non-co-operation with evil. I am here, therefore, to invite and submit cheerfully to the highest penalty that can be inflicted upon me for what in law is deliberate crime, and what appears to me to be the highest duty of a citizen. The only course open to you, the Judge and the assessors, is either to resign your posts and thus dissociate yourselves from evil, if you feel that the law you are called upon to administer is an evil, and that in reality I am innocent, or to inflict on me the severest penalty, if you believe that the system and the law you are assisting to administer are good for the people of this country, and that my activity is, therefore, injurious to the common weal."

-Mahatma Gandhi's statement before sentencing at his 1922 trial for exciting disaffection towards the government @ The United States Of America
