Some more Ballard Volleyball Questions:

Q: What are tryouts like? What is the time commitment if I make a team? What kind of conditioning should I be doing to prepare?

A: Tryouts will be held July 15–16, when initial team selections are made. They are designed to show what you can do and test your volleyball limits. They can be physically and mentally challenging. Final team decisions will be announced the following week.

Two-a-day practices begin Monday, July 20 and run through August 5 (the day before school starts). THIS PERIOD IS CRITICAL AS WE WILL BE WORKING ON POSITIONS AND OFFENSIVE/DEFENSIVE SYSTEMS. If you are planning a summer vacation, this is not the recommended time to be doing so. Morning sessions are from 6:30–8:30 AM, and evening sessions take place sometime between 5:00–8:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, depending on the team you make. Some half-day Saturdays or Friday evening practices may also be scheduled. Players rostered on multiple teams may have a heavier workload.

Varsity will compete in the Bluegrass State Games on July 31 and August 1 in Lexington, playing in the High School Open (highest) division.

During the regular season (through October 16), teams will practice or compete Monday through Thursday. Varsity will participate in 2–3 weekend tournaments (Friday evenings and Saturdays) in Louisville or Lexington, while Freshman and JV teams may have 1-2 tournaments. All players are required to be at all home matches as most will have game play or line judge/score keeping work duties. Matches consist of Freshman, JV then Varsity matches and typically run between 5-9 pm. You are encouraged to cheer on and support your teammates and/or do homework if you are not playing/working the match. While we have no hard rules against missing practices (life gets in the way on occasion) we will offer team placement, playing time and positions first to those making practice a high priority.

Most current club players are already involved in weight training or conditioning, and this is strongly encouraged to help prevent injuries and maximize performance. Practices can be very demanding and will require a high level of physical endurance—especially during the 6:30 AM sessions.

A few questions we've received this week.

Q: Can i come to just one open gym or all of them. Do I need to register?

A: Come to as many as you want. They are open to all Ballard enrolled students or students enrolled in a defined Ballard feeder school. No need to register for now. We should have enough coaches and nets to accommodate a large group.

Q: How hard is it to make Ballard's team. Is Ballard a good volleyball school?

A: Over the past few years, we have had about 40-60 athletes try out and we have historically been able to place 30-35 on teams. Nearly all play Club Volleyball. In 2025 Ballard was ranked as high as #5 in the state and finished in the top 10. We've had back-to-back school records setting seasons with a record of 29-5 in 2025 and 29-8 in 2024. About 1/2 our matches each year are against ranked teams. Numerous other school records have been set over the past few years. Our Class of 2025 had 4 girls decide to play in college: Two going Division 3 and Two going Division 1.
