In our coaching handbook this is what it states:

1. The "Rule of Three" (One-on-One Interactions)
The most critical rule is that an adult participant (coach, volunteer, or official) cannot be alone in a vehicle with a minor athlete who is not their own child.
Requirement: There must be at least two minors or another adult present in the vehicle at all times.
Exceptions: A coach can drive a minor alone only in emergency circumstances or if they have a "Dual Relationship" (e.g., they are the legal guardian or a close family member).

2. Written Parental Consent
If a coach must transport an athlete (even in a group or carpool), the organization usually requires annual written consent from the parent or guardian.
The consent must specify that the parent allows the adult to transport the minor for "In-Program" travel (practices, tournaments, etc.).
Even with consent, the goal remains to avoid one-on-one time (e.g., picking up the coach's own child first and dropping them off last).

Sooooo what's the problem here? There is none... Durham messed up! messed up! They are the ones that failed the kids not the coaches!

I feel like this is an overreaction as well as a retaliation from somebody losing a game...
Durham and That school could be in kahoots with each other and I wouldn't rule out LISD either...

Estacado High School Coach Files Grievance After Being Told to Resign Over Student Transportation Incident

An Estacado High School coach has filed a Level One Grievance with Lubbock ISD after being told to resign or face termination following a transportation issue involving a scheduled basketball game.

According to a written statement submitted by Tamarick Courtney, a bus was delivered to Estacado High School on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, to transport the basketball team to Cooper Liberty High School—but the bus arrived without keys. Courtney states that coaches attempted to follow proper procedures to obtain the keys but were unsuccessful and were unable to reach Durham Transportation or the LISD District Office for assistance.

With the team facing the possibility of forfeiting the game, Courtney says coaches, parents, and community members made the decision to transport players in personal vehicles so the athletes could compete as scheduled. Courtney emphasized that the decision was made solely to prevent the team from missing the game, noting that the athletes had worked and practiced extensively for the opportunity to play.

Courtney states that he has since been contacted by LISD Human Resources and told to resign immediately or be terminated on Monday for transporting students. In the grievance, Courtney acknowledges responsibility for a traffic-related issue that occurred during the situation but maintains that transporting students would not have happened if the bus had arrived with keys as intended.

In the grievance filing, Courtney describes the situation as unfair and places responsibility on the district’s transportation failure, stating that staff acted in good faith to manage an emergency situation using personal resources. He also noted his commitment to Estacado High School, the students, and representing the district in a professional manner.

Courtney has declined to resign, confirmed he has contacted the Lubbock Branch NAACP for assistance, and is requesting a Level One Grievance hearing for the matter to be reconsidered.

As of now, Lubbock ISD has not publicly commented on the grievance.
