💙 The Heart Behind Infant Aquatics: Meet Judy Heumann
Before Infant Aquatics® was a worldwide network of instructors, it started with something incredibly simple: a mom looking at her own children and wanting to keep them safe.
In the early 1970s, Judy Heumann had two young children and a backyard swimming pool. She understood how quickly that pool could become dangerous, and she began developing ways to teach her own children not just to enjoy the water—but to have real skills they could use if they ever found themselves in it alone.
What started as a mother's desire to protect her children became a calling that has now spanned more than 50 years.
Judy spent decades teaching, learning, refining techniques and studying what young children are truly capable of in the water. She believed survival swimming should be more than simply teaching a child to float. Children should have the opportunity to learn to swim, find the surface, roll back to breathe, rest and continue swimming to safety —and then build upon those survival skills until they became strong, confident swimmers.
In 2000, Judy founded Infant Aquatics® and created the Infant Aquatic Survival® program. Since then, she has personally taught more than 8,000 children and trained more than 150 instructors, with her teaching and philosophy spreading across the world.
But numbers don't tell the whole story.
What makes Judy so special—and what I hope families understand when they choose Infant Aquatics—is the heart behind the method.
For more than five decades, this woman has dedicated her life to children. To drowning prevention. To continually learning. To training instructors who understand that the tiny person in front of us isn't simply another swim lesson—they are someone's entire world.
That 50+ years of knowledge and experience is what our instructors get to learn from and carry forward into our own communities.
At Infant Aquatics of Lubbock, we are incredibly proud to be a small piece of the legacy Judy started all those years ago.
Every float.
Every roll.
Every first independent swim.
Every parent who gets to watch their child become safer and stronger in the water.
It all traces back to a mother who believed children were capable of more. 💙
