I’ve been thinking about dancing a lot lately.

I may never go back on stage but it’s something I need in my life. It’s one of those things that fell off my list because adulting took over my life. I keep telling myself I don’t have time and I don’t have access when the truth of the matter is I have a body, have been a choreographer for over 40 years and, apparently, have time because I watch A LOT of YouTube.

What’s stopping me? Me. Wanting to be perfect. Wanting my old body back. Lying to myself about being busy.

Here’s what I’m thinking about for the week ahead:

1) I say this, literally, every day to the people I coach: “One small step in the right direction is still progress. Consistency over perfection will get you where you want to go.” I even did a presentation for entitled “Small Steps Matter.” What do I not believe this is true for me too?

2) I am low key; not low energy, low effort, low presence or low output. I don’t know if that’s a bad marketing strategy, my attempt at humility or just not really caring anymore what people think.

3) I am so excited for the week ahead even though last week kicked my butt. I won’t let the disappointments of a previous time (last week or last decade) keep me from being fully present and anticipating the best. It’s over and I’ve gotten all I need from it. I’m ready to move on….in all the ways.

I hope you take small steps towards joy this week mo matter what.

Happy Sunday. ✨☀️🫶🏾

Some of the hardest days of my life were made better or worse because someone listened….or didn’t.

Some of those times were worse because I was told I was just too sensitive and why didn’t I just “let it go” or “get over it.” Things got better when I surrounded myself with people who just let me feel (thank God for mental health professionals).

I also needed people around me who would get me up and out, remind me to do the things I loved, push me to help myself even if it meant just getting out of my pajamas and going to Walmart.

Mental health crises are not something people willing sign up for and shouldn’t be treated like a paper cut. We can do our part. Thank you for the suggestions.

Here’s what I’m thinking about for the week ahead:

1) I’m thankful to have choices.
2) I’m thankful to have real friends.
3) I’m thankful to health insurance for my therapy and my meds.
4) I know what it’s like to just want it all to end.
5) I am proof that you can begin again.

Take care of yourself and each other this week.
Happy Sunday. ✨☀️💚

Even though it’s been 3 years since I transitioned from the gym to a 9-5, it has taken a while to establish a routine that made me feel grounded, able to do my job effectively AND still have time for my passions. There is an invisible line of exhaustion that always seems to be lurking when I’m done with my work day but I NEED to be clear and alert mentally to work on other things before falling into bed.

Did I mention I despise routine?
Did I mention I need routine?

When my work day is done, I:
✨turn off my work light and turn on my lamp.
✨close my blinds.
✨light incense to burn off the day
✨fill my diffuser with their lavender oil or Peace and Harmony blend.
✨take a shower and put on comfy clothes
✨heat up my dinner

….And, most importantly, I take my L-Theanine. Theanine is a unique amino acid found naturally in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). Theanine promotes relaxation while maintaining alertness and promotes healthy cognitive function. My mind needs me to be calm while having enough focus to still work on the other parts of my life without falling asleep. Heavy on the “without falling asleep” part. 🙂

I am both an employee and an entrepreneur.

I work a full time job Monday through Friday.
I train clients on Tuesday and Thursday.
I teach classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday.
I teach other things in between.
I live in a both/and world.
And it’s ok.

Don’t let the internet tell you it’s not.

There are things I miss out on because the wellness world too often operates during the day time (often times, if we are honest, because the target population is for people don’t have to work). There are things I can do that I wasn’t able to when I didn’t have PTO and a reliable direct deposit.

And it’s ok.

If I am honest, I dream of a day when I win the lottery and I don’t have to work at all. Then I’d probably spend my days doing the work I’ve always done for free. But I’m not there.

And it’s ok.

May we respect the path that others take to support their lives, their dreams, their family, their health, their passion and their future.

Because whether you are an employee or an entrepreneur, the bills have to be paid. The electric company doesn’t care what path you take to cover your balance.

Now that I’ve taught my two classes, I can enjoy the rest of this paid holiday.

Happy Labor Day to everyone who works their butt off to make a way. ✨☀️

I am extremely excited to return to San Diego this year LIVE at The Health and Well-Being Coaching Conference this time as the moderator of an amazing panel entitled “From Passion to Profession: Cultivating a Sustainable Coaching Career.” I have personally taken an unconventional approach to my coaching career; much different than the approach that was offered to me when I started and I can’t wait to hear the insight from Noel | Health Coach Mentor | NBC-HWC Brittany Kowalski | Phoenix Energy Wellness Elyse Wagner | Health Coaching & Behavior Change and Susan Whitman!

Interest in health and well-being coaching continues to grow across sectors and around the world. This panel will share what it really takes for coaches to cultivate a sustainable and successful career in a continually evolving profession.

Thank you Dr. Jessica Matthews and Jay for giving me the opportunity to be apart of something so amazing! I can’t believe this is the 4th year!

And, also, this is a sign for anyone who does things in an unconventional way: IT STILL COUNTS!!!!! Keep doing your thing!

Happy Friday! ✨☀️✨

I can remember a time (multiple times) when I felt like I didn’t matter and what I was going through didn’t matter. I just wanted the pain to stop.

This story isn’t just mine. It belongs to people you interact with every day who smile and seem like the life of the party, who seemingly have everything going for them.

The pain is deep and the private shame can eat you alive.

I just wanted to say out loud:
You matter.
Your life matters.
I’m sorry for your pain.
I’m sorry you feel like no one has been there for you.
People would care if you were gone.
People would feel your absence.
Things can get better.
Please don’t go through this alone.
Reach out to someone.
If you don’t feel safe enough to reach out to someone you know, reach out to a stranger.
It won’t always been this hard.
You are loved.

It is . Please check on people. Work on your judgmental attitude. Open your arms.

We need each other. Sometimes some of us need extra.

If you are in crisis right now and feel like you have no place to turn, PLEASE call or text 988 IMMEDIATELY.

You are loved. 🙏🏿💚

“Bless me, bless me
God, not just for me
But so everyone around me
Can have everything they need.
Let all these folks that’s with me
God, have everything they need.”
Kirk Franklin

I needed something that gave me purpose. I needed something that gave me the opportunity to use my gift to lead. I needed something that helped me move. I needed something that would help me help others help themselves.

God gave me group fitness and because I was willing (even though folks looked down on me for taking my Master’s degree and using it to teach as opposed to sit behind a desk), I had a career that allowed me to be blessed and bless others.

Teaching was the best choice for me at the time for everything I wanted and needed. I didn’t just want to teach but I NEEDED a job that helped me be available in a specific way for my young kids. I started working at the gym when they were 11 months and 6 years old (the exact age my grandchildren are now).

For everyone who’s ever stepped foot in one of my classes, I want you to know (and I hope you felt it), it was NEVER about me. It was ALWAYS for the collective, the community, US. I wanted to support you as much as you supported me. I thank you for being a part of my journey.

As I bring my month of celebrating group fitness to an end, I just want to celebrate all that has been and all that is coming. I taught my two classes this morning with the knowing that my career isn’t over. It’s just different and it will continue to evolve as I evolve. I wholeheartedly believe I haven’t even taught the best classes of my life yet. 🙂

Keep moving. ✨

I went to my first game yesterday.

I am a born and bred Chicago and enjoy sports but I promise I haven’t been into the Bears since 1985. I don’t know any of the players and kept saying things like “that number belongs to or that’s the Refrigerator’s number. That’s supposed to be Jim McMahon in that jersey.”

Mind you, I was like 10 years old at the time. I’m stuck in a time period that’s never coming back.

It’s like that with group fitness.

No one is this picture is as young as they used to be. No instructor you’ve ever had will be the exact same for 40 years. We get older, our bodies change and we’re tired and achy. We don’t seem to get grace for that. People show up 20 years later and expect you to be the same.

I am the same in spirit but I will NEVER be the same in body. Neither will you. Can we enjoy each other where we are right now and give newer instructors a chance?

I long for the days of Otis Wilson, Sweetness 🕊️, Mike Singletary Official, Richard Dent and Matt Suey. But I also enjoyed yesterday’s game without knowing anyone’s name.

May we continue to honor the past without mourning it. May we live in the present without judging it. May we be open to the future without fearing it.

shout out to all my fellow group instructors and everyone who’s ever worn a Bear’s uniform. Our impact is still felt. Our knees just can’t take the impact. 🙂

Happy Sunday! ✨☀️🏈
