GTS and the Urban Conservation Corps of the Inland Empire recently completed a brush chipper safety training at the Louis Rubidoux Nature Center. GTS Instructors Lucas and Sheridan not only demonstrated safe operation of the machine but the benefits that a chipper brings to the environment, including destroying harmful insects and returning nutrients to the forest. Corps members demonstrated proficiency through practical and online testing and earned their Tree Care Industry Association Ground Operations Chipper Specialist Certificate. , , , , , ,

RIP Joe Taylor. An outstanding young leader and conservation corps member. He excelled in all his classes and we are very proud to have played a small role in his achievements as a TCIA certified chainsaw specialist and tree climber. He was a great example to his peers as a leader and a safety advocate. But no one could save him from a careless driver. You are sorely missed. , , , ,

What an absolute privilege to work with the young adults of the Urban Conservation Corps. These are the future foresters and conservationists who will lead the fight against destructive wildfires in the future and help to expand the tree canopy that is so crucial for California and beyond. Every class I’m more impressed and inspired by the hard work and dedication by these young men and women that often come from difficult circumstances most of us cannot relate to. It literally renews my faith in humanity. And how about getting to teach forestry in a location that has been occupied by humans for thousands of years in the shadow of ancient rock art! Soon to be an educational site for indigenous history. , , , , , , ,

Last week the UCC met up for an inspirational career day with many partners sharing their personal journeys to inspire Corpsmembers to get into conservation and forestry jobs. One of SCMF’s newly hired Corpsmembers who now works at the city of Rancho, came back to talk about her journey and about taking all of the opportunities and trainings seriously at the UCC.

SCMF’s Urban Conservation Corps are currently completing their Chipper and Tree Climbing training at the UCC San Bernardino facility. Twelve Corpsmembers recently successfully completed training. SCMF is very proud of the next generation of conservation leaders. Thank you to Gemini Training Solutions LLC for inspiring, motivating and certifying UCC members. Training is made possible through CAL FIRE workforce development funding.

GTS just completed an introduction to tree climbing class in San Bernardino with the Urban Conservation Corps. We had a great group of young men and women that would not quit and climbed higher each day! GTS is fortunate to have the best instructors. First James Son helped to develop the chainsaw safety class and now Lucas Mitchell is knocking it out of the park with climbing and tree hazard assessment. , , ,

I am so lucky to be able to teach chainsaw safety in such a beautiful setting! I always learn as much as I teach from the conservation corps.
