One of the biggest misconceptions about Jiu Jitsu is that people hear “a smaller person can beat a bigger person” and immediately jump to the most extreme example.

“No way a 150-pound black belt is beating a 280-pound world champion black belt.”

Of course not.

That’s not the point.

The real essence of Jiu Jitsu is that skill can overcome size. Not that size suddenly becomes irrelevant.

A larger, equally skilled opponent will always present a tremendous challenge. The laws of physics don’t disappear when you tie on a black belt.

But here’s the question:

How often in your life are you actually going to face a larger, highly skilled black belt?

For most people, almost never.

What you’re far more likely to encounter are larger people with less training, less technique, less timing, and less understanding of leverage.

That’s where Jiu Jitsu shines.

It gives smaller practitioners the ability to neutralize strength, manage distance, create control, and apply technique in situations where size alone would normally dominate.

The goal was never to prove that a smaller person beats every larger person.

The goal is to close the gap.

To give the smaller person a chance.

To make skill matter more than attributes.

Standing next to these guys, I’m reminded that I’ll probably always be the smaller guy in the room. That’s fine.

Jiu Jitsu isn’t about pretending size doesn’t matter.

It’s about developing the skills that matter more.

Huge shoutout to everyone who stepped on the mats and represented Phoenix BJJ at the Boston Open this weekend. Win or lose, it takes courage, discipline, and heart to compete and every single one of you showed that all day long.

Proud of the effort, the teamwork, and the way everyone supported each other from the first match to the last. Medals are great but the growth, experience, and willingness to test yourselves is what really matters.

Thank you to the teammates, friends, and families who came out to support. Back to the gym with more knowledge, more motivation, and more work to do.
