Local Wrestlers Shine at USA Wrestling National Duals
Several wrestlers from the Marysville and Jonathan Alder girls wrestling programs represented Team Ohio at the prestigious USA Wrestling National Duals this past week, competing against many of the nation's top athletes.
The National Duals is considered one of the toughest events of the summer wrestling season. Unlike traditional individual tournaments, wrestlers compete as part of state teams, facing elite opponents from across the country while earning points for their team. Each state is limited to just two entries per division, making selection to Team Ohio a significant achievement.
Leading the way was Marysville's Cami Leng, who earned All-Tournament Team honors after posting a perfect 7-0 record in the Junior Division. Leng's outstanding performance helped guide the Ohio Blue Team to a fourth-place finish among 43 teams.
In the 16U Division, Avery Riley contributed to Ohio Blue's impressive sixth-place finish among 36 teams, finishing the tournament with a 4-3 individual record against some of the nation's top competitors.
National Duals presents a unique challenge for wrestlers. Unlike traditional tournaments, where athletes are eliminated after two losses, competitors continue wrestling throughout the event, requiring resilience, determination, and a commitment to their teammates regardless of individual results. Wrestlers often face state champions and nationally ranked opponents match after match, making success at the tournament especially meaningful.
Several local athletes represented Team Ohio across multiple age divisions and styles. In freestyle competition, Hiley Katris turned in one of the strongest performances of the tournament, compiling a 7-1 record in the 14U Freestyle Division and 7-0 in Greco. Layla VanCura finished 5-4, Kirra Streng posted a 4-4 record in the 16U Division and Laney Grimes gained valuable national-level experience while competing in the 14U Division. Marysville’s Hiley Katris was named to the 14U Greco All-Tournament team with her undefeated record.
Jonathan Alder standout Reese Thomas also had an impressive showing, posting a 5-1 record and 2-1 record in Greco for the Ohio Blue 16U team. Thomas recorded victories over opponents from Colorado, Texas, California, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma.
Marysville Coaches Shawn Andrews and Rae McDonald served as coaches on the Junior Freestyle and Greco Teams who both finished in the top 8 (Freestyle 4th, Greco National Runner-up)
The National Duals marked the final major competition before the upcoming USA Wrestling Fargo National Championships, which will be held in July. For many of the athletes, the event served as an important measuring stick after months of training and competition dating back to March.
Several Marysville wrestlers have already qualified for Fargo, including Avery Riley, Layla VanCura, Kirra Streng, Cami Leng, and Cara Leng. Additional wrestlers who competed throughout the spring freestyle season include Bailey Smith, Kiley Lewis, Kendalyn Wilson, Lilli Vanover, and Lauren Mobley.
As the summer season continues, local wrestlers will now turn their attention to Fargo, widely regarded as the premier national championship event in amateur wrestling.
