Freedom is a beautiful word—
but it has never been free.
It was paid for
in folded flags,
in empty chairs,
in unfinished dreams,
and in the quiet heartbreak
of families left behind.
It was bought by those
who answered duty’s call,
who gave their tomorrows
so we could wake to ours.
Today, we remember
the men and women
who paid the highest price—
not just with silence,
but with gratitude.
Because the cost of freedom
will always be measured
by those who never made it home.
