For 67 years, Vin Scully sat alone in the booth. No partner, no color man, no crosstalk, just one voice carrying nine innings by itself. It is the hardest way there is to call a baseball game, and he made it sound like the easiest thing in the world.

He started with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 and went west with them in 1958, where a brand new baseball city learned the game largely through him. The timing was a kind of miracle. The transistor radio had just arrived, and fans carried his voice right into the ballpark, watching the action in front of them while letting Scully tell them what they were seeing. He called that little radio the greatest break of his career. It turned a stadium full of strangers into something closer to a neighborhood.

He worked the same way whether it was Koufax throwing a perfect game or a forgettable doubleheader in August. He had a story ready for every player and a reason to care about every inning, and he never pushed his voice past what the moment asked of it. That is the part that cannot be taught. Broadcasting has had its greats and it will have more, but there was one Vin Scully, and seven decades of summer nights belonged to him.
