Sweat Panda Fitness is a Health and Wellness facility located in McKinleyville, CA. We believe that health should be your number one priority. No matter what you love in this world, better health will improve your life! We’ve designed our training systems to benefit people just like you. We want you looking forward to coming into the gym; not dreading your occasional visit. In order to make Sweat Panda Fitness one of the best parts of your day, we start by identifying your own personal goals so that we can develop a specific plan to get you to where you want to go. We understand that functional fitness may seem intimidating if you’ve never done it before, which is why we will first enroll you in Sweat Panda Foundations Course, a beginners course we developed for people who are new to CrossFit and functional fitness. This course will get you pointed in the right direction and make sure that you start off on the right foot, and that you are comfortable moving forward. Our mission is to help people take their lives back and get the most out of their every day...oh, and to have fun doing it!

Here’s the August number: 27 athletes in the Consistency Club — 16 or more classes each.

Honestly? I want this list to grow every month. I want more names on it. The challenge is out there — 16 classes in a month. That’s about 4 per week. Totally doable.

Congrats to everyone on it, especially first-timers. To everyone not yet on it — next month is right in front of you. 👏

The single biggest predictor of gym consistency? It’s not willpower.

Research on exercise adherence is pretty clear:

People who have someone to train with are dramatically more consistent than people who go alone.

Not because they’re more motivated. Because the social contract is real. When someone else is counting on you to show up, you show up.

This is why we have a community. This is why we do partner workouts. This is why Panda Payback rewards you for bringing friends in.

The gym that helps you find your people is the gym you’ll actually keep going to.

Don’t have a training partner? You will within a month of joining.

Today belongs to Gen. Happy birthday.
You show up, you put in the work, and you make this gym better just by being in it. Thanks for being a big part of this community for so long.
Enjoy every bit of today.

Yesterday, I turned 51 years old. Half a century plus one.
In my twenties, I genuinely believed 50 meant cardigans, canes, and retirement homes.
Back then, hitting the gym was pure vanity. I wanted to look good—period. I built the muscles that looked fit, and I convinced myself I was.
Then came my thirties, and my very first CrossFit workout delivered a swift slap to the ego. I wasn’t actually fit; I just looked the part. I had glaring gaps in my functional capacity. Deciding to jump into CrossFit 16 years ago changed the trajectory. Sure, I still wanted to look good, but the goal shifted to becoming truly capable, prepared for anything, backed by capacity and actual health markers.
Now, at 51, with 16 years of CrossFit in the books, the priority evolved again a few years ago. What matters most is extending my functional lifespan: staying strong enough to lift heavy, agile enough to move through space, and conditioned enough to go the distance.
At 51:
* I can carry someone to safety in a crisis.
* I can run fast or far if an emergency hits.
* I can tackle a 20 mile ride, a 10 mile hike, or a 5 mile run on a moment’s notice.
* I can play ball with Koa and Kai and keep going until they tap out.
* I endeavor to be the anchor people can rely on when things get hard.
* I am setting up my future self to take care of others at 80, not to be cared for.
None of us can control the unexpected; accidents happen, and illness exists. But what we can control is putting our bodies in the best possible position to handle that adversity, endure, and recover. To be there for the people we love for as long as possible.
I won’t pretend I’ve completely outgrown wanting to look good in the mirror—vanity will never completely leave building, but it has definitely taken a back seat to what actually matters.
Here’s to independent living, staying capable, and pursuing health. Do it for yourself, and do it for the people who rely on you. Thank you to everyone in my circle. Thank you for constantly pushing me to be better. I’m deeply grateful for this life.

Two very different days, one intentional plan.

Friday was a grind — high volume, high fatigue, the kind of workout that tests your engine and your mental game. Saturday flipped the script: lower volume, partner work, a little running mixed in. Lighter on the system, heavier on the fun and the team energy with some partner agility games added in the Warm Up.

That’s not an accident. That’s programming.

We don’t hammer max effort day after day — that’s how you burn people out or break them down. Instead, we shift the demands throughout the week: a high-volume day gets balanced by a lower-volume day, a grindy solo workout gets balanced by something social and lighter. Zoom out over the full cycle and you’ll see the same pattern — stress and recovery, intensity and ease, working together so you keep making progress without digging a hole you can’t climb out of.

That’s how you train for years, not just for one brutal Friday. 🐼

There’s a specific kind of person who comes to the 5am class. Here’s what they have in common.

The 5am athletes at Sweat Panda don’t all look the same.

Different ages. Different backgrounds. Different jobs.

But they all made the same decision: fitness happens before the rest of the world wakes up. Before the day has a chance to take over. Before the emails, the kids, the obligations.

One hour. In the dark. Before anyone else.

If that sounds like you — or like who you want to be — there’s a 5am class with your name on it…or a 6am if you’re looking for an extra hour of shut eye 😉.
