Lately, I’ve had a heavy heart after hearing and seeing the way some coaches are treating their players. Too often, I’m seeing girls torn down in the name of “winning” being belittled, pushed aside, or even bullied by the very people who are supposed to be building them up.

Yes, as coaches, we have a responsibility to hold our athletes accountable. I do. We’re here to challenge them, to push them, to expect a lot — because we believe in them. We see what they’re capable of, even when they can’t see it themselves. Sometimes, that requires tough love. But tough love should never come at the cost of a player’s confidence, dignity, or mental health.

What we shouldn’t be doing is tearing these young women down. We shouldn’t allow team cliques, silent treatment, or bullying culture to exist. We shouldn’t be coaching just for our own egos or a scoreboard. This game is bigger than that.

Every girl who steps into a lesson with me; if she wants to be there, if she shows up ready to learn and grow — then I am all in. Not just for that hour, but beyond it. I’ll be there after a hard game when she’s frustrated and questioning herself. I’ll be the first one cheering her on after a great weekend. I’ll be in her corner through the highs and lows, because this isn’t just about teaching mechanics. It’s about mentoring human beings.

To the coaches who have taken on the responsibility of leading girls and young women in this game , we have to do better. We are shaping more than softball players; we are shaping future leaders, teammates, mothers, professionals, and strong women.

Be the coach they’ll remember for all the right reasons.
