Joseph Pilates age 70 in his studio 939 Eighth Avenue NYC. (The photographer probably made him put a shirt on.) His wife Clara in her traditional nurse's uniform. The client is Opera singer Roberta Peters. We haven't identified the other young woman. (Mary Bowen says that it's not Hannah Sakmirda).
This was at least a decade before polyester workout clothing, and there wasn't a fitness industry to supply clothes, shoes, or equipment.
We found these pictures when were looking for some posters for the studio. We did a google search of the Life Magazine archive. We picked a couple we liked and Qoop sent us some nice high quality framed prints. Over the last few years we've shown the photos to curious practitioners. We think they're really cool because we still do/teach the same exercises every day. Our instructors always enjoy learning the "archival exercises" from Romana and teaching them in the studio.
