Mr. Gail Skinner, known as “Tate” then, began training in Aikido in 1972 with Vecchio Sensei at Lakeland Community College. Marlene also practiced for more than a year. Vecchio Sensei was a dear friend to both of us and attended and gave a reading at our wedding 45 years ago. We always stayed in touch after we moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1977. We sent cards and letters, along with many trips back to visit Aikido of Cleveland in Mentor, Ohio. We also attended Aikido seminars held across the country, where we were able to reconnect with Vecchio Sensei and her students. We shared a friendship that continued during the good and not-so-good times, due to circumstances that life’s challenges bring. Gail has kept Sensei’s spirit of Aikido alive as the chief instructor of Aikido of the Canyon Lands in Tucson, Arizona for over 40 years. Our many friends at North Coast Aikikai also keep her spirit alive when they gather and practice .
So, Rest In Peace, Sensei Vecchio. You will be remembered and missed.

Last week NCA celebrated the new year by participating in our annual Kagami-beraki class, bringing in the new year with energy and good vibs. This year the dojo received a shinto shrine Kamidana (神棚) donated by Sensei. Sensei is looking for all the help we can get.... Also, NCA would like to congratulate Georgette on her promotion to 6th dan. Georgette taught a class and then we all gathered to the "Blue Fin" restaurant to celebrate with fellow students and friends. Sensei presented a specially carved and engraved Bokken from Japan to Georgette from the school as a gift for her long dedication to Aikido and the school. "Fun was had by all!"

A big thank you! goes out to all of the dedicated Aikido students of NCA who helped with the New year's cleaning お正月のお掃除 "O toshi gatsu no o soji" for the dojo and helped put up the dojo Christmas decorations. This is an important part of cleansing the dojo and one's self for the New year's arrival. In the sh*to religon O'sensei did this often to please 年神 "Toshigami" the shinto god of the new year and the Pizza afterwards was not bad either... 😀-Sensei-
