Mind the GAP. A little “Cross Rippin’” today. Miles and miles of solitude. Mid 40’s and light rain took me back to the cyclocross days and some great memories. And when it was time to turn around, more memories of another type of two wheeled goodness.

This creature has been hanging around and snatching up the offerings I’m leaving out. Takes time, but trust is developing. Corvids have the ability to distinguish and remember faces and despite my hideousness, this one may be taking a liking to me.

If you need stickers, t-shirts, tattoos and some great stories…here’s your man. It’s always an adventure when you hang out with a legend. Hoping to do more of it! Thanks Bill!

This is awkward...but I’m doing it anyway.
“You’re only as old as you feel.” Words my mom used to say a lot. She stayed active throughout her life, and I attribute my desire to move to those words and her example. I never gave much thought to “getting old”, and now that it’s happened I’m doing my best to slow the process. I view fitness (this is something my clients are probably tired of hearing) as a way of living. It’s not “working out” or “going to the gym”; it’s a daily practice, a habit.
My purpose here is not to turn into yet another shirtless Instagram bro, but to hopefully inspire a few folks and show a bit of what’s possible, even for a skinny old guy with average genetics. Desire, commitment, and a little time is all you need to get started. There’s a lot we cannot control in this world, but fitness ain’t one of them, and it can’t be taken from you. Control what you can, manage the rest.
There are no hacks, just work and bit of your time. I can help.

A little motor pacing on my ride last week. It’s rutting season for these awesome creatures and they can be a little unpredictable in the Fall so be careful out there. And despite the appearance of the porta-potty in the background, this was not at a cross race. 😆

Know your bone density (BMD)? You should. Bone mineral density not unlike most things related to our bodies’ functioning, decreases with age. However, this can be moderated with regular exercise when that exercise is comprised of lifting weights. This stimulates bone growth and can maintain the integrity of our bones, reducing the likelihood of a break if we fall.
In addition, DEXA provides other very useful info in terms of body composition, including Appendicular Lean Mass (ALM) or the measurement of lean tissue in the arms and legs, percentage of total fat mass, and the most important and insidious type of fat, visceral fat. This type of fat collects around the organs and can impair their function. You want as little of this as possible.
For any new training client I work with, they will first be sent for DEXA. It’s an incredibly easy scan and only takes about 15 minutes. It’s also super low radiation so there’s no worries about excessive radiation exposure. And if you head to First Call Urgent Care in Columbia as a walk in, you’ll be fortunate to work with Keith who is awesome and loves his job!
Reach out with any questions. And for all you endurance athletes out there, here’s a breakdown of relative bone density scores by sport: Swimmers have the lowest bone density when compared to age matched controls, followed by cyclists who are no better than the average population and then runners who are only slightly better than the average person.
LIFT WEIGHTS PEOPLE!

Awesome time as usual at my favorite training camp.

Been a while since I’ve turned a wheel in anger so I thought I’d try out a Gran Fondo. This was part of a national series and was held in my old stomping grounds in Frederick. I had a great time riding the roads I used to train on everyday and exploring some new ones. Was also great to ride with an old training buddy and good friend.
Although it was just shy of the 100 miles advertised (96.77 according to my computer) it did deliver with over 10k of climbing. It was a very well run event and I think I’ll do more of these. I had fun, as you can see in each photo where I’m displaying what folks say is my “I’m having fun” face. A big thanks to Mike for the great pics.

Need more support for your 2620’s? Have a solution for you. Use some moldable plastic (comes in the form of small pellets and you heat them up in warm water) then mold, shape and trim them for a perfect fit and increased arch support. After a time I’ve found the arch pieces start to deform a bit and lose a little stiffness and this is the perfect solution.
Remember that arch support in your cycling shoes is a must, as we lose proprioception and foot mechanics with the use of stiff soled cycling shoes. Proper arch support helps to restore some of what’s lost and also helps to give you the feeling that the load is a little more distributed along the length of the foot with less concentration on the forefoot/cleat area.
As ever, if you need some help with this or any other bike fitting issues, please reach out and I will help get you sorted.

Getting some climbing legs back this week.
