What is Wolff’s Law?
Wolff’s Law is a principle in anatomy and orthopedics that states:

Bone adapts to the loads under which it is placed.

This means that bone tissue remodels itself over time to become stronger in response to mechanical stress (like weight-bearing or muscle pull), and conversely, it weakens when mechanical load is reduced (like during bed rest or immobilization).In physical therapy or rehab, we often apply Wolff’s Law to encourage progressive loading to stimulate bone healing and strength.
Wolff’s law was created by the German anatomist and surgeon Julius Wolff in the 19th century. It is a part of bone theory that explains how bones typically respond to stress. It marks the adaptive changes that bones can make internally to become stronger and stronger in order to resist strain. Wolff’s law also applies in the inverse case.
