She thought she might have run over a kitten — until she heard meowing coming from her car 😳

Laila pulled over on a busy highway after spotting the tiny kitten but couldn’t find him anywhere. When she got home, the faint cries led her to the unbelievable truth: the kitten had hitched a ride inside her spare tire.

She decided to foster him, and little by little he went from a scared, hiding kitten to joining the other cats — before eventually finding his forever family in the U.S. ❤️

California is sending a strong message about how horses should be treated, keeping its ban on horse slaughter for human consumption firmly in place.

Under state law, it is illegal to knowingly buy, sell, receive, possess, or transport a horse, pony, mule, or donkey with the intent that the animal will be slaughtered for human consumption. People who violate the law can face felony charges and up to three years in prison. California law also provides for fines in certain cases involving the sale or purchase of horse meat.

The law covers more than what happens inside a slaughterhouse. It targets the chain of activity that can move an animal toward slaughter. That matters because horses can be bought and transferred through different hands before ultimately reaching a slaughter facility.

Horse slaughter has long been a deeply divisive issue in the United States. While horse slaughterhouses are not currently operating in California, American horses have historically entered the slaughter pipeline and been transported to facilities outside the country. Animal welfare advocates have spent years pushing for stronger protections against that trade.

For supporters of the California law, the issue is about more than meat. Horses are often treated as companions, working partners, athletes, and members of families. Many people believe that when a horse can no longer be ridden, compete, or work, that should not mean the animal's life is suddenly worth less.

The law also highlights an ongoing problem facing horse owners. When people can no longer afford to care for a horse or no longer have the ability to keep one, finding a safe home can be difficult and expensive. Rescue groups and sanctuaries often face limited space and resources, making responsible ownership and rehoming especially important.

California's protections do not solve every problem facing unwanted or neglected horses. They do, however, create a legal barrier against using the state as part of the horse meat trade.

And for advocates who have fought to keep horses out of slaughter, that protection is a meaningful step.

A horse should not have to earn its right to live by being useful, profitable, or young. When an animal reaches the end of its working life, it still deserves safety, care, and a chance to live out the rest of its life without being sent to slaughter.

When rescuers examined this sloth, they found more than 40 ticks on her body — some so large they were filled with eggs.

After carefully removing them and giving her a bath, she finally looked more comfortable — and ready to start healing 💛

A volunteer reviewed the shelter’s security cameras and discovered something she did not expect: during the night, 58-year-old Antônio Anastácio Calheiros slept on a wooden table, without a mattress or pillow, surrounded by the dogs he cared for.

Antônio had dedicated his life to rescuing abandoned animals and came to have more than 800 dogs under his care. Keeping them requires around 200 kilos of food every day, in addition to medication and special food for animals that are sick or malnourished.

To keep feeding them, he even went so far as to sell his own furniture. And sleeping on that table was not staged: he explained that there were not enough kennels and that he needed to stay close by so he could hear if the dogs started fighting during the night.

With the help of two workers and a cook, he continues caring for the animals. His story began after his only dog, a pit bull who had fallen ill, died. From then on, he began rescuing abandoned dogs, eventually turning his own life into a shelter for hundreds of animals that had nowhere else to go.

Getting her out of the mud would take an entire team 🐘

After villagers in Kenya found a massive elephant trapped in a mud pit, the Kenya Wildlife Service stayed by her side overnight before joining Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's mobile veterinary team for a hours-long rescue the next morning. Once finally pulled onto solid ground, the healthy elephant immediately got to her feet and headed off in the direction of her herd.
