Redefine Special Encouragement for all mommas - most especially those like me who are called to parent exceptional kiddos. The Bible promises an abundant life for EVERY mom!

Follow me for doses of hope, joy, and a little tough-love. Welcome to Redefine Special. Whoever you are, and why ever you’re here, I’m glad that you found this spot. I began writing years ago, sensing that it was important to chronicle my journey as the mom of a special needs child. That journaling, which began on a PC the size of an ATM machine, continued in spurts for many years. Only recently did I take the giant leap of publishing my experiences, one small blog post at a time. After the initial highs and lows (and more lows) of having a special child, a great hope, joy, and peace eventually broke through. It broke out over everything in my life. I truly had an awakening to what Special is. It’s not a burden to bear, a hardship to contend with, or even something to just accept. The definition of special has been changed by our society and put in “air quotes” – to be used as a euphemism for less than, undesirable, or outcast. My journey brought me back to the original, true definition of the word: extraordinary and particularly valued. I am writing each post for that one other special mom out there, who thinks she just has to accept her struggle in life and deal with it. No sister! Follow along with me and you will see, you are so exceptionally gifted in this life. YOU, too, are special! If you’re not that mom should you read on? Well, apparently YES! The most unexpected part of sharing my story has been the people who are affected by it. Men, women, moms, dads, college kids. People from every walk of life have taken a moment to tell me they are so touched, changed, or challenged by the posts. Because it is a true story of God’s mercy and grace, it is an encouragement to all.

Me typing up this WARNING for my special mommas: Fear is logical. it makes sense. That's a trap I fell into time and time again in the early years of our journey with a rare genetic disorder.

Just because it's what everyone else does in the same situation, doesn't mean it's right. The Bible says that fear is not from God, and that His perfect love casts it out. So shake that off, be intentional about resisting it, and rely on THE Ttruth, rather than what is logical and sensible in your situation.

This isn't a post about living in denial - this is a post about living in God's promises for your life which are still true and certain, no matter the circumstance you face today.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7 You've heard this before, but how do you walk in it? The key is this: to let go of fear, is actually to let go of the thing you are fearful about.

Is the fear related to your child's future? Is it an upcoming doctor visit, test result, new school, health challenge, behavior setback? You'll have to surrender THAT to God, and then the weakness and fear around it will be replaced by a sound mind, God's love and a powerful attitude.

What does that look like? It starts with a simple prayer "God, I am so worried about [the thing that keeps you awake at night]. Help me surrender it to you. You hold me and my child in your hands, your eyes and heart are ever turned towards us. Give me the peace that comes with trusting you in this area." Breathe that in and out a few times and let strength and soundness of mind settle in as HIs love washes over you.

Leaning into God's perspective doesn’t erase hard things - it changes how we live through them. Isaiah 55:9 & Jeremiah 29:11 are great verses to meditate on if you feel stuck, hopeless or discouraged due to what you are currently seeing/experiencing.

“The closer you get to God, the more you realize He’s in no hurry.” - Bob Sorge

Anyone else in a hurry for God to answer a prayer, fix a situation, or come through in some way? Spending time in His presence - meditating for just a few extra minutes on a verse - will help quiet your "hurry" so that you can become more aware of His eternal perspective.

"Rejoice Always. Pray Continually." Those two verses sit right next to each other in Paul's letter to the Thessalonians. I think he put them together because you can't rejoice always unless you're praying continually. If your rejoice-meter is low today, check what you're spending your time on: worrying, researching, complaining, scrolling? Replace those with praying and the rejoicing will be found.

How to shift your focus from what you see to what God wants to show you: Here's the tip that will never fail. Open. Your. Bible. I know you're busy, tired, and overwhelmed. But find five minutes. You can do it!

Sometimes the extra effort of "What to Read" will get you to sit it right back down, so get yourself a Bible App guided devotional, pick a YouVersion plan or get the First5 app by Proverbs 31 Ministries, I did the First15 app everyday for over a year! There are lots more good options - if you have a suggestion post it in the comments.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” — Isaiah 55:9

I used to study that diagnosis paper like it somehow held the full story. But a few years into my special mom journey, God showed me that He had a completely different perspective - and that if I'd just lift my eyes and thoughts off of that paper and look to Him - I would begin to see it too.

I love this verse so much - I cannot get too much reminding of it's truth. Take 60 seconds today and meditate on this verse. In your mind apply it like a salve over whatever has been keeping you awake at night.

Hey Facebook friends! I'm BACK! I have not opened facebook in yearsssss. Life got busy and sharing pictures on Instagram felt like the max energy I could spend on Social Media.

But, I missed the interaction. The conversations over here, and the deeper (albeit digital) connections.

So I'm back, creating content specifically for Facebook, and excited to see all my friends I've missed :)

So much has happened and there is so much more in store, I cant wait to share it all with you again.
