Open Series finale

As an athlete, itโ€™s easy to compare. Whether its physical comparison, our scores on the leaderboard or even comparison to our previous record history/numbers. Itโ€™s important to remember our effort. Whether your score was top 5 or you are the last name on the roster, you gave your full effort. The full effort that you were capable of giving in that moment. How many times have you questioned if you couldโ€™ve gone harder? If you mentally couldโ€™ve just pushed a little more. Those โ€œwhat ifsโ€ start to kick in and we spiral.

The reality; you gave what you had in those moments. What happened then doesnโ€™t matter. The same effort was given regardless of your placement. You pushed. What matters is what you decide to do about it. What can you gain from this experience?

Stop feeling like you need to prove yourself to anyone. Keep working for it. Keep showing up. Keep being patient. Keep taking care of yourself. Keep working your craft.

It takes so much courage not to chase expectations. It takes courage not to seek approval. Protecting our peace and energy is so important both physically and mentally. When we get heated, are quick to react and get upset about our performance (vs mindfully responding) we lose sight of our ability to be in the moment and be fully present and grateful for what is around us, for our progress, for the community of people weโ€™ve attracted amongst our journey.

Learn to stay close to yourself.
Learn to be present.
Learn to let go of control.

You are where youโ€™re meant to be in this moment right here.

Open Series; Presence and Control.

How often in the midst of a workout have you thought about how hard it was? All youโ€™re thinking about is how heavy your breathing or maybe youโ€™ve even gotten to the point where you have stopped.

Momentโ€™s where you get lost in the aching, the breath, the fatigue are also the moments we tend to give our negative thoughts too much power. Be present. Take control of your mind. Our minds are powerful. Weโ€™re in them every single day. Being able to control our minds is what will get through anything. We take a step back, talk ourselves through and fight against the grain.

This week, I challenge you to ground yourself in those moments. Talk yourself through the motions as simply as you can. Leave out the internal dialogue and the angst. Weโ€™re doing โ€œmental repsโ€.

*For example, an athlete performing 22.2 on the Deadlifts โ€œset up, grip , pullโ€, Athlete on the burpees โ€œdown, step up, overโ€.

This exercise allows us to transition our conscious thoughts into intentional action. It allows us to zone out all of the temporary discomfort and only focus on performing the action at hand. Even on days you're overwhelmed. Focus on where you are. What youโ€™re doing and hone in on it step by step. Every-time that we work this practice, we strengthen our minds to be the kind of person we want to be.

Being able to put your full effort into something and be able to give it your absolute all isnโ€™t easy. When it starts to get hard, when our breathing starts to get heavier, when our lungs start to burn; our mind starts telling us to stop way before our bodies actually need to. The feeling we chase as athletes is the gratification of being able to win or be better than someone else when that isnโ€™t productive in any way to our growth. To be able to finish something and say โ€œI put my absolute all into that and I couldnโ€™t have pushed any harderโ€ is a sense of freedom. You have chosen not to compare. You have chosen to focus on your own limits. You have chosen to ignore the doubt and put your full heart into your own abilities and be proud of that. And what if we didnโ€™t place where we wanted? We work toward being better. We focus on our weaknesses and in trying to fill those holes. Day in and day out.
