The world's only re-creation of a 19th century Great Lakes cargo schooner, the S/V Denis Sullivan is an educational vessel connecting learners of all ages to the Great Lakes, oceans, and our world of water through experiential learning and technology.
The sailing vessel S/V Denis Sullivan is the world's only recreation of a 19th century three-masted Great Lakes schooner. The S/V Denis Sullivan was completed in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2000 by professional shipwrights and nearly 1,000 volunteers. The schooner is a modern educational sailing vessel with two diesel engines, a scientific laboratory, two computer workstations, and modern communication and navigation equipment. She maintains single bunks in co-ed areas, shared toilets (heads) and showers, and limited storage. The vessel can carry up to 50 passengers on day sails and 21 participants overnight. She is complemented by a professional crew of ten. The S/V Denis Sullivan provides an array of genuine maritime experiences, from two-hour Lake Watches for families to multi-day educational sails for teens and adults. Water is the world’s most precious resource, and the S/V Denis Sullivan provides a unique platform from which to provide marine education, leadership training, and personal development to visitors of all ages. Explore this site or contact our Marine Department to find out how you can be part of this amazing experience. Uncover your new relationship with fresh water through a trip aboard the S/V Denis Sullivan this year!
Operating as usual

As the sun sets on 2020, we hope to see you in 2021 with our beloved S/V Denis Sullivan hopefully back out on the water!
We truly appreciate our dedicated volunteers and crew, as well as the community and educational partners and donors who support our programs.
Even though we were unable to operate as usual in 2020, our crew and volunteers were still able to raise nearly 1/3 of our usual annual funds through both local and international donors and wonderful members of our community.
If you would like to keep up to date on what our volunteers are doing and how you can become involved, check out the Friends Of The S/V Denis Sullivan page, as this S/V Denis Sullivan page will remain unmonitored until the ship can bring back her captain and crew.
We hope to be able to bring back caretakers to the S/V Denis Sullivan for over the harsh winter and begin planning for whatever type of sailing season 2021 may hold.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years, especially this last year.
We truly do appreciate it.
Fair winds

🚨HELP SAVE S/V Denis Sullivan🚨
The iconic ship on Milwaukee’s lakefront needs support. In the midst of the pandemic, she lost her captain and crew due to furloughs. A ship like this needs care to set sail in the future.

I jumped on board when the ship was still sailing to meet the crew, learn how it was built, and what its mission includes. See that story below and help if you can.

Losing our captain and chief mate in addition to never bringing on the rest of the crew in 2020, as well as the loss of our $300,000 annual maintenence and operation budget, has the S/V Denis Sullivan going into the harsh Wisconsin winter without her caretakers.
We hope to be able to set sail again someday in the future, but that is currently uncertain.
If you can help us out in any way, from donations to helping spread the word, we greatly appreciate it.
Fair winds.

I would like to sincerely thank everyone that emailed me, messaged me, commented or responded to me on my last Facebook post about being furloughed from the S/V Denis Sullivan. I found your words and comments so encouraging and kind. The idea of not being the Sullivan’s Captain and caretaker saddens me to my core. I have professionally and personally grown up on this vessel. She has taught me so much. I have watched my daughter grow up on her. I have fallen in love with Milwaukee and Wisconsin. I am so proud to be the Captain of Wisconsin’s Flagship. Especially when I have gotten to take her to my home town of Erie and she is docked next to Pennsylvania’s Flagship, the Brig Niagara. The idea of moving on to a different vessel is almost inconceivable to me.
If you can donate in these unbelievable times, I wish you would. Not so much for my personal benefit, although I am not going to lie I need a job just like everyone else, but the Sullivan needs to be cared for and maintained year round. Not just in the sailing season. The Chief mate is also getting furloughed and between just Jonny and I taking care of the Sullivan in the winter months, it's already a big job. I can’t image how she will be after our absence or for any new crew that may take over when she is to sail again.

Or if you prefer to write a check we will happily accept those as well.

The answer to today's Whatzit Wendesday is: COPPER BACKSPLASH
This personalized copper backsplash for the sink in our galley features the S/V Denis Sullivan, a compass rose, and our home waters: the Great Lakes.
It helps the water from our drying rack drain back into the sink and helps prevent rot in the wood behind the sink.
Whatzit Wednesday!

What is your best Halloween costume?
Be sure to show it off at Haunted Tall Ship 2021!
The answer to yesterday's Whatzit Wednesday is: GENERAL ALARM BELL IN MAIN HOLD
The general alarm system has an alarm bell in each compartment to alert crew and trainees of a fire, a person overboard, or another emergency onboard or nearby. How the alarm sounds tells us if it is a person overboard (3 long), fire (continuous), or some other emergency (varies). It is extremely loud and easily wakes most people, and can be heard anywhere onboard. Since we are a floating island while underway, we must respond to any emergencies rapidly.

The answer to yesterday's Whatzit Wednesday is: BUNKS IN THE 5-MAN
We have 32 bunks onboard: 10 in the focsle for crew, 16 in the main hold for trainees, 5 in the 5-man off the galley for trainees, and the captain's cabin in the pilot house.
Each bunk has a curtain, light, mattress, pillow, you, and all your stuff! There is not much space onboard and loose gear causes tripping hazards on a moving ship or in the dark, so everything you bring needs to stay in your bunk with you.
Be sure to study the ship layout before you embark on your adventure! You don't want to accidentally end up in the feeding chamber while looking for your bunk!

Our 'Haunted Ship' event has always been a huge hit, from zombies to pirates!
Come aboard in 2021 to see who may be hiding in the bunks belowdecks or what our ships surgeon may be chopping up in the galley!
We may have lost a crew member to the invading hordes, but the coffin will be thoroughly secured as it is sent to the bottom of the lake and hopefully the rest of our crew will survive!
Haunted Tall Ship returns in 2021!
Sometimes its best to hide from the zombies rather than fight, but be sure to have a slower friend with you to sacrifice first!

Haunted Tall Ship will be back in 2021!
You can never be to careful with who you let onboard, luckily our guard is fairly good at his job!
There are only maybe 2 or 3 zombies below decks, but don't worry, we have it all under control! (once we find them...)
Haunted Tall Ship will return in 2021!
The answer to yesterday's Whatzit Wednesday is: POTABLE FRESH WATER TANK
This is specifically our main hold water tank. We have water tanks below the companionway ladders to our focsle, main hold, and galley holding a total of 850 gallons of potable water onboard. When we have the ship at full capacity, this amount of water will last us 10-14 days.
Help us protect our ship from pirates! Be sure to bring along your sword and practice your 'Arrgh's!
Haunted Tall Ship returns in 2021!
We would love nothing more than to be back out sailing with our students and the public next year, but everyone needs to mask up in public so that can happen!
Wear your mask when going out, to protect others and show everyone you care to help slow the pandemic!
