Swing Park

The swing Park is located in the Multimedia Garden at the eastern end of the Marsupial Bridge. in 2012 beintween initially installed these swings under the holton bridge, in the media garden on the east side of the marsupial bridge.

These swings add purpose to our urban infrastructure and a playful interruption to those passing by. It was our hope that the installation of these swings will serve as not only an element of recreation, but as a point of reconsideration for these leftover spaces in our city. Since its installtion , the swings have been taken over by the City of Milwaukee and are no longer maintaned or associated with beintween. This page is place for people to post their stories and photos of the space and to share any updates. here are some articles about the swing park in the last 3 years: http://urbanmilwaukee.com/2012/10/15/plenty-of-horne-the-holton-bridge-swings/ http://onmilwaukee.com/myOMC/authors/mollysnyder/popuppark.html http://milwaukeenns.org/2015/03/03/with-swing-park-city-hopes-to-look-forward-not-back/ http://milwaukeeparks.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-swing-park-new-improved.html http://www.scrippsmedia.com/tmj4/news/11-new-swings-installed-under-Milwaukee-bridge-268261192.html http://www.jsonline.com/entertainment/arts/controversy-hangs-over-planning-of-new-east-side-swing-park-b99317836z1-268539842.html http://urbanmilwaukee.com/2014/12/16/in-public-why-the-swing-park-failed/

Plenty of Horne: Meeting Addresses Swing Park Homicides

Support the Swing Park.

urbanmilwaukee.com Mayor, police, city officials, residents have a solution-oriented meeting short on anger.

A town hall meeting to discuss safety at the “Swing Park” has been set for Wednesday, August 22, at 6:30 p.m. at Casablanca (728 E. Brady St.). Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, District 1 Police Captain Diana Rowe, Ald. Nik Kovac, and representatives from the Department of Public Works and the Brady Street BID are expected to be on hand. Neighbors and the general public are encouraged to attend.

[08/07/18]   Last nights tragic shooting at The Swing Park reminds us of the rampant violence that plagues this and many other cities. Two (more) young men lost their lives last night. We don't pretend to know the root causes of this violence.
Society is broken, and brokenness is always a chance for deeper healing. Communing is the only way to bring about change, and the swing park has been a place for people to connect and is a place of joy and respite for most. There is talk of removing the swings. Removing this will not reli(e)ve what has been lost. In this time of mourning, rather than pointing fingers, we ought to find healing and discover ways to support the families of so many who have lost their beloved sons.
Much has been said about this space drawing many more people after the swings went up. It has become a victim of it's own success.
The Swing Park was conceived and implemented as a way to bring people to what was once a dark, creepy under used space under the Holton St. bridge. It has become a place for people to gather for all variety of enjoyable activities, Bike in Movie series, flea markets, RW24 checkpoint, plays, photo shoots, music videos, and a place to hang with friends, family, and enjoy being a kid again.
Much has been done to help make this a safer space by the addition of surveillance cameras, more and brighter lighting, a 10pm curfew, and regular patrols by MPD, Swing Park is no less safe than almost any other public space in the city. It is being reported by the news media that Swing Park is somehow a factor in this shooting. The Swing Park is not the problem. Let's work together to curb the senseless violence that affects us all.

The Holton Street bridge swing park is still one of Milwaukee's hidden gems

Pop up park

This video was shot September 12, 2012. That night a group of friends got together and under cover of darkness, and at risk of being arrested, hung 13 swings under the Holton Street bridge.
Today The Swing Park is an official city park, thanks to the efforts of that original group, some amazing support from the community and of course the city of Milwaukee. Thank you all for bringing this little gem to a once little used, dark and creepy spot under the Holton Street bridge.
Enjoy the park.

[06/15/15]   SERIOUSLY PEOPLE!!!!!!
It took all of 3 days to destroy the mother of all swings yet again.
The City and DPW has been more than accommodating in their effort to keep the swing park in good, safe condition. All of us at Beintween have worked very hard for almost 3 years to get this park established and to have it become a permanent fixture in Milwaukee. We understand that as is usually the case, there a few folks out there that hold little regard for public property, and that over the weekend, have taken it upon themselves to abuse the swing park for a few minutes of displaced aggression, thus depriving the rest of us the opportunity to enjoy what has become a wonderful gathering place, and one of the more popular spaces in the area. At this point it will be very difficult to convince the City to repair and replace the mother of all swings, for a fourth time. But regardless, if you are visiting the park and see folks abusing any of the equipment, please politely remind them that these swings belong to all of us and should be used in a manor that will ensure we can continue to enjoy them long in to the future.

[06/13/15]   The DPW also installed a new handicap swing this week. If you're not handicapped, stay off of it. And remember, being a dumb ass is not a handicap.
