I built out a custom order this week for an early June backpacking trip in Rocky Mountain National Park. With Colorado's historic snow drought this year, high-elevation lakes sit ice-free weeks ahead of schedule.

The challenge: The fish are awake, but the water is still cold, and the major summer hatches are still a month away. You need a highly specific arsenal that triggers opportunistic strikes from the top of the water column to the bottom.

Here is the breakdown of the 18-fly "Bubble Box" I curated for this specific trip:

Dry/Dropper (Picture 1): High-Vis Foam Terrestrials. Early season fish are looking up, but traditional hackle dries will often waterlog in alpine chop. I leaned heavily on foam beetles with pink hot spots and foam ants with orange posts. They float like corks, are easy to track, and perfectly mimic wind-blown bugs. Supported by classic Parachute Adams and simple Silver Bead Zebra Midges to drift near the bottom for those calm, midge-hatch mornings.

Subsurface (Picture 2): The Anchors. When the wind howls (which it will), the fish go deep. I included heavy gold-bead Pine Squirrel Leeches in Olive. The movement on the pine squirrel tail is unbeatable. Supported by Olive Scuds.

The flows right now are absolute perfection. With the Ark pushing a nice 300-450 cfs from below Granite to Portland and the S Platte from the Dream Stream through Deckers holding steady in that sweet 220-265 cfs range... the nymphing is going to be lights out this weekend. I’ve been on the vise this week restocking my boxes with these Firebead Peccary Jigs and Rainbow Warriors to get down quick in that heavier current. What is everyone else throwing this weekend?

This morning, I wrapped up this custom 22-fly high water and streamer box for a father and son hitting the South Platte this weekend. They needed heavy worms, micro leeches, and conehead buggers to get down in the fast water, so I got them on the vise and ready for pickup earlier today.
