This weekend for the Goons

The Goons had a tough draw Saturday as they faced two elite teams in Kearny, dropping their first game before tying their second. Bryce Bodner had a monster day with two home runs. Noah Griffin hit his fifth home run of the season as he had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s on the day. Brody Nettles had 2 hits and an RBI. Shane McBride and Vincent Gagliardi had two hits each, while Jackson Patterson singled & Dillon Todd walked. McBride threw well in a no decision going 5 innings, with one walk and 5 strikeouts. Nick Kehoe made his season debut on the rubber with a nice inning of relief. David Bacosa, Anthony Battaglino, Griffin & Gagliardi each saw mound time, with Battaglino & Gagliardi punching out a batter each.

The Goons ran the table at Diamond Nation, going 4-0 on the weekend to take home the Summer Finale Championship! It was an incredible display of perseverance by the Goons as they overcame a 7-0 deficit in the semifinal to win in extras. In the bottom of the seventh, down a run and down to their final out, tournament MVP Anthony Battaglino hit a base clearing triple to end the game and send the Goons to the championship game. The Goons then won another close game, defeating the Loudon South Eagles (VA) 4-3 for the championship.

David Bacosa was fantastic as he came on in relief in the semifinal, going 7 innings for the win with a mix of pitches to keep the Steelsharks off balances. Vincent Gagliardi was at his best once again in the final, throwing 3 strong innings, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 4. Shane McBride got the save as he threw the final 2.2 innings, allowing one hit & ending the game with a strikeout with the tying run in scoring position. They were supported by stellar defense as Jackson Patterson turned a triple play with the bases loaded and nobody out in the top of the first. Bryce Bodner made several incredible catches in centerfield.

Noah Griffin launched a 3 run home run, which put the Goons up 3-0 in the final. Griffin had 3 hits & a walk on the day. Nick Kehoe had a 3 hit day as he drove home 2 & scored 3 times. Battaglino had 2 hits & 4 RBI’s to cap off his monster weekend. Vincent hit 2 doubles, with an RBI & a walk. Dillon Todd singled, doubled & scored 3 times. Patterson had a hit & a walk. Bacosa walked 3 times & scored twice. Bodner & Carter Burns each scored twice. Gianna Gagliardi walked twice & scored. Brody Nettles reached base twice & caught a fine game behind the plate. McBride drove in a pair of runs.
