π¨ Athletic Trainer Health & Safety Alert π¨
During the current school year, Trinity Health Athletic Trainers serving our partner schools have treated student-athletes diagnosed with Rhabdomyolysis (Rhabdo), a serious medical condition that can occur when damaged muscle tissue breaks down rapidly and releases substances into the bloodstream that can injure the kidneys and, in severe cases, lead to kidney failure.
As healthcare professionals working directly with student-athletes, we believe it is important to raise awareness among athletes, parents, coaches, and school personnel.
While Rhabdomyolysis is uncommon in young athletes, it is serious and can present in different ways. Current research and clinical experience suggest that energy drinks, high doses of caffeine, and pre-workout supplements, especially when combined with intense physical activity, may increase risk in some individuals.
β οΈ Warning Signs & Symptoms May Include:
β’ Severe muscle pain, weakness, or cramping, especially in the arms, legs, or shoulders
β’ Abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting
β’ Increased heart rate
β’ Unusual fatigue, dizziness, or feeling faint
β’ Swelling or bruising in affected muscle areas
β’ Decreased urination
In some cases, symptoms can even resemble a concussion despite no head injury occurring.
π₯ If an athlete experiences these symptoms, particularly after intense exercise, prompt medical evaluation is recommended.
