Last I took my son to the park in the neighborhood to play catch. There was a girl's softball game going on, probably 9-10 year olds. It was GREAT!!! The excitement of the game, the cheering....we could not help but stop and watch! We just stood at the fence by 3rd base and one of the teams hit a fairly soft blooperish line drive to the girl at 3rd who didn't catch it. Her coach, in the 3rd base dugout got on her...."If you would have turned your glove the right way you would have caught that....have told you over and over but you refuse to!"
REMEMBER, one of the benefits of youth sports is to build self confidence and self esteem. A kid feels bad enough missing the play. Players at this age need to be reminded through encouragement, to continue to develop their self esteem/confidence.
It is easy to get frustrated as a coach, parent or coaching parent! (this could have been her dad). Just remember, these are kids we have playing a game to help develop them as people. Let's all remember HOW we develop them is important!
One of the most important skills I have used and taught in my years as a manager and facilitator is that of EQ, emotional intelligence. Here is an article from Forbes on EQ. If you like this I have a couple of more resources for you!
forbes.com On the night of April 13, 1970, Apollo 13 was 200,000 miles from Earth and nearing the moon. Unbeknownst to the crew, the craft's oxygen tank had sparked a fire that destroyed one oxygen tank and heavily damaged another. After astronaut, Jack Swigert noticed a fuel pressure warning and famously quip…
This is an excellent article that every parent of a kid playing sports should read AND learn from. This is from the kids' perspective.

I just posted this into one of my dental groups and it is something that I think many people should hear. I interview a lot of people for our rapidly growing practice and these are three things I run across constantly!
Job Hunting Tips (Office Manager, feel free to add to this)
As someone who is doing a lot of interviewing and hiring for a busy practice, I want to share with all my friends in this group a couple of things.
- When you go in for an interview somewhere, be sure to research the practice before hand. Ask your friends about it. Know their street repuatation. Read their reviews. Be prepared for them to want to know what you know about them.
- If you cannot keep an interview appt, call and let them know. You would be amazed at how many people today do not show up for scheduled interviews. This is a professional courtesy that should always be extended. Even if you are not going to work here, it makes a big statement about your professionalism.
- When you ask questions, don't lead with 'what is your package?" This sends the signal that you are looking for a job only, not a career with like minded people who want to be part of an awesome practice. Ask first about the office, what the work environments is like, insurances that are taken, other practical things like that. Save the money and benefits questions until you have established good rapport.
I hope this helps! The intent is to help you all as you are interviewing. It's going to be a busy season this year. It's a great time to be job looking!
