Sun down and high water Irma 2017

Its a tough call the moment you realize that the best way to save your boat is to lift sink it. But better sunk on the lift than bouncing down the canal and possibly into homes, or into the street.

We love them but in the end they are only boats. Its the family and friends that matter. Boats and motors, they can be replaced.

Wishing a fast and full recovery for all the victims of Irma, here in Florida and throughout the Caribbean.

Wolcott Marine’s Tuesday boating Tip, Launching your boat (first tip is be sure your boat heading the right direction). To have a safe launch it’s helpful to have two people; one to operate the tow vehicle and one operate the boat. Prior to you get underway load your cooler, personal gear and coast guard equipment and store it. Be sure the Drain Plug is installed and tight. Just before you back the boat into the water remove all the trailing straps and engine support and disconnect the trailer light plug from the vehicle. Again check the Drain Plug! Back down far enough to allow engine cooling water to be picked up or the top of the trailer fenders is little above of the water. Set the emergency break and put the vehicle in park. Lower the drive and start the engine and let it to warm up. Take off the winch hook from the bow eye and proceed to launch. Once the boat is clear, pull away and park the vehicle and trailer.
Have a good bating day, Mark

Taz-z Tuesday tips for safe boating with your dog.
Before heading out on the water please follow the following tips to ensure your dogs boating voyage is a safe one. 1) Be sure your dogs has an identification tag on their collar and life jacket. 2) Invest in a fitted life jacket with a handle. The handle is to lift the dog out of the water. You may think your dog is a strong swimmer but if the dog was to go over board far from land, panic, water temperature and fatigue set in. A PFD can help save it’s life 3) Develop a plan for you and the passengers in case your dog goes overboard. If you are around the dog in the water cut down the engine (if you can) and call them to ladder or swim platform pull them by the PFD handle never by the collar. If you can, don’t jump in the water to help the dog, with its fear it will make you a floating object to try to get out of the water. 4) Keep your dog hydrated give them water from the tap or bottle. Try not to let the dog drink the sea water. 5) After you hit land use bring doggie bags to clean after your dog, It will make a pleasurable trip for all.
Happy Boating, Taz-z

Tuesdays Tip :While you’re out on the water
1. Drink responsibly, especially if you are the skipper, 2. Keep aware of the weather use the weather channels on your VHF radio. 3. Watch for changes in Wind Speed and Cloud Formations. Know where the nearest harbor or protected anchorage is. 4. Monitor fuel consumption and remaining range. Always use a third of fuel going to your voyage one third getting back and one third for reserve. 5. Monitor VHF radio Channel 16 for emergency traffic. Be prepared to lend assistance if you are the nearest vessel. 6. Know the waters in which you are navigating. Refer to local charts, Stay within marked channels and be conscious of tides and currents.
Happy Boating, Mark

Tuesday tip-always to a Pre-departure check list before leaving the dock
1. Check weather report and tides/currents 2. File a float plan with someone you know. Tell them where you’re going and when you intend to return 3. Identify non-swimmers (Supply them with fitted life jackets while on the water) 4. Identify second-in-command in case of skipper’s incapacitation 5. Identify the location and the operation of the following Coast Guard required safety items if fitted (Life jackets – should be readily accessible, Lifesling or throwable flotation – should be immediately accessible. Horn or sound-producing device as required, Fire extinguishers and a brief description of their operation (P.A.S.S.), Flares or other Visual Distress Signals, Check operation of Navigation Lights, 6. Identify incremental recommended gear if fitted. VHF Radio; turn on and select Channel 16. Ensure that one other person knows how to transmit a Mayday, Ensure that one anchor and rode is ready for immediate use, Turn on GPS, A length of nylon line for a towline, perhaps 75' x 1/2". 7. Describe engine shutdown technique. 8. Check bilges; pump dry if water is present. 9. Before engine is started, If gasoline inboard: run blower for at least four minutes, Check lubricating oil, Check fuel level, Make sure buzzers sound on engine panel. 10. Once engine is started. Check for signs of cooling water flow and check for oil pressure. Attach kill switch lanyard if fitted.
Enjoy a safe Boating day, Mark

Tuesdays tip
Inspect the gas cap on your boat, be sure the chain, thread and the o-ring in good shape. If it’s not replace it with a new one to help protect the fuel tank from water intrusion. Water in the fuel may be very expensive.

Tuesday Tip: When reading a chart, depths are measured at low tide. So if you are worried about the tide, your chart will still be accurate!
