Sand & Stone Triathlon Series
This trail is no longer available to ride. Sand & Stone is an off road triathlon series.
Operating as usual
There are a lot of photos on the Sand & Stone page from over the years. They may shut the page down due to no activity. If you want photos, please go out and copy them so you have them.
A note from Wes Wilkens -
Hey riders of the woods, 50th Earth day is upon us.
Happy Earth Day!!!!- looks like things are looking up in terms of pandemic sort of things and the woods are a fantastic place to be right now.
Tour de Picayune- Swamp Woods festival for May 2, 2020 is cancelled of course. I'm an optimist but reality is here.
Can't get a permit from the Forestry yet for the event- 9th annual.
But not giving up yet regarding the Durrwalker Cup for 2020:
The 50 mile cross country race/tour portion that is.
I'm thinking May 16- 2 weeks further out and just beyond the date specified by the Gov as the end for the latest in - home stay order. I think.
Is there anybody interested in trying again? If I can get at least a dozen competitors we could give it go.
I will update the course and the TdP website by Friday, (April 24)
Hope all is well for everyone. All our single track trails on the west side are very good. Riding everywhere is really good for that matter. Death Valley and rutty rails are an extreme challenge indeed however. Scary just to look at.
The course will be a great one. Probably a two lap version
leaving out from Snake Pit camp where it's private and we have full facilities this year. We will also practice social distancing too.
Okay, please let me know what you think. - Wes W
As most of us are aware, Willow Run no longer exists. The property was sold to a developer who has blocked off all access and leveled much of the trails. We will keep his site up so everyone can go in and view photos from the past.
We had a good run at the Quarry and it will be tough to replicate.
Thanks for all of the memories.
Another race complete. Thank you to everyone who came out today, either as a racer or as a spectator.
The tradition continues. One of the first triathlons in Naples, created by Joe Bonness.
Happy Birthday Iron Joe
Thanks NAT’s (Naples Area Triathletes) for letting us borrow your tent.
Don’t forget to come out today for a swim, ride and run. It will be fun. 12:00 noon.
We will be working on the “run trail” this Sunday (March 18) at 1:00. If your planning to come out next week for the Blarney Stone and have not helped with any trail work so far this season, here is your chance to lend a hand. We will park inside.
March 25th - Blarney Stone triathlon. 12:00 noon. Swim, Ride, Run
Water has receded 18" since Hurricane Irma. Top picture is the fire pit now. The rest of the photos are right after the storm.
We were able to ride the entire lap at the Quarry this evening. There are still some hot spots. Most of the back area through the Rock Garden are burned out but rideable. Figure 8 to the end is untouched.
Some photos from today of Willow Run due to the active wildfires. Much of the Preserve and Rock Garden areas are or were on fire.
The water has dropped and we are ready to start working on the trail. Attempting to get out on Sunday around noon to get to it.
Still a lot of water out at Willow Run. Therefore we are moving this weekends trail maintenance out a couple of weeks. Stay tuned for the next update. We repeat, no maintenance this weekend.
Attention Quarry Riders - we may have the opportunity to ride again this coming season at "The Quarry". If we are able to ride this coming season, there will be a lot of trail maintenance required. The new policy will be "if you want to ride, you MUST contribute. Period. Over the past several years, we have had a small core group of volunteers but a large group of riders. Not this year.
The property is private and approved waivers will be required to ride. Without the approval from the owner, you cannot ride. The way to get approved is to volunteer or contribute in other ways. Once it dry's out, look for a trail maintenance schedule.
