FORT MYERS ? If Thursday night's 48-0 exhibition win over Bishop Verot was any indication, First Baptist does not want to wait three months to play some football.
"We wish it was Game 1 of the season," FBA quarterback Tyler Dean said. "But we've got a whole summer to lift, to get ready. We're excited."
The FBA offense steamrolled the Vikings, scoring on every drive until late in the third quarter. The defense swarmed the backfield to force the shutout. The overall performance put an exclamation point on the Lions' spring practice session.
"I think we've got a group of kids that understand after a period of time that there's a sacrifice that needs to be made and a commitment that needs to be made," First Baptist coach Bill Sparacio said. "When they make that genuinely, good things happen."
With a number of starters from last year's regional championship team departing, the Lions entered the spring facing the question of whether those stepping up would be able to continue the program's forward momentum. Dean, who platooned with Jack Bueltel as a sophomore last fall, helped to answer that with a firm yes, completing 7 of 13 passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half.
"He's a really smart kid," Sparacio said. "He runs our offense really well. He just understands what we want him to do and he does a really nice job."
Running back Christian Rodriguez, who is heading into his senior year, rushed 10 times for 130 yards. Half of those yards came on one of his two touchdown runs, a 68-yarder during which he cut around the Verot safeties and took off.
A big part of the offensive s***k came from right tackle Jake Walker, right guard Chris Hassey, center John Eardley, left guard Colton Rinde and the big man of the bunch, 6-foo-3, 290-pound left tackle Seth Penner. That group kept the backfield virtually Viking free.
"I don't think I got hit one time," Dean said. "It definitely takes the butterflies away heading into a game when you know that your O-line is going to go out there and not let you get hit."
Meanwhile, the defense did not allow the Vikings to get into any kind of rhythm. The front seven, which was largely made up of two-way players, had six tackles for a loss, sacking mobile quarterback Quinn Farrell twice.
"I think we've got some football players," Sparacio said. "They do things in the weight room and feel good about what they transfer onto the field. I think that each group of kids wants to go out and make sure they play the way their predecessors played."
To summarize from the meeting Saturday. The boys will leave for Arkansas Thursday morning (flight already locked in).
The rest of the plans are tentative.
Arrive in Arkansas do a walk through at a neighboring school, fun event Thursday night. Tour University of Arkansas Friday. Looking to do some kind of joint team activity (similar to college bowl games). Win game Friday evening. Leave Saturday morning. Parents are welcome to come but please stay at separate hotel and do separate events. There will be fundraising for players but parents are responsible for raising own funds (hence this site to get together to help coordinate). If I missed anything or have misspoken please feel free to correct me. :)
