Providing birding tours and sustainable landscape design consulting in Naples, FL

[09/15/18]   Had a GREAT day today. Following up on a ebird post by Bente Torvund, I decided to check out Jones Grade. I had been down the road before but never gone beyond the gate onto the trail. Got a LIFER Swainson's wabler, plus 4 FOY birds - Acadian Flycatcher, Scarlet Tanager, Worm-eating wabler and a Veery.
If you go, the trail is buggy, humid and muddy in spots. It's like a SWAMP out there.

[07/01/18]   June Birding Challenge

From Collier County

98 species all ABA countable
not bad for being out of the state for 9 days

on another note:

from Pueblo County, Colorado

56 species all ABA countable

included 9 life species in only two days. yippee!

Added a county lifer to my birding list today. Finally found a Mangrove Cuckoo after chasing them for more than 4 years. Happy dance.

Led the area 11 count group for the Naples CBC yesterday. Our total species count was down a little from the last couple of years with only 61 species. I suspect the cold temps of 46 degrees to start the day with did not help. Best bird of the day was a Scarlet Tanager at Freedom Park. The photos I got were not great but help with the ID. Thanks to Harris Abramson and Jill Furman for sticking with me the whole 10.5 hours to get the birds. Thanks to Andy Scholtz and Hole in the Wall CC for getting us off to a great start for the day.

Santa gave me a present today. After several years chasing others sightings, I finally found a White-crowned pigeon today at 10,000 islands trail. I was following up a sighting by Judy Ferris on Dec. 20th. My husband and I got on the trail before dawn. We walked past the tower a ways because I was also following a lead on a mangrove cuckoo. Didn't get the cuckoo and my husband gave up early because of the mosquitoes. Really thick and deer flies too. I was returning to the car about an hour after sunrise when I heard up ahead doves flying away from the path. Finally I spotted the bird at the top of a snag on the west side of the trail. Yay, at last!

Before running up to Fort Myers today to see the Brant, I was scouting out my assigned area for the 10,000 islands CBC. I found this juvenile Snail Kite eating a snail!

[12/15/16]   Participated in the Fakahatchee Christmas Bird Count yesterday. Overall numbers were down some most likely due to the heavy fog until after 9 am and the fact it was very dry in the area we were counting. The only open water was on the canals which haven't provided good bird habitat in the past. The best bird of the day was a least sandpiper which I had not seen on a count in this area before. It points up the lack of open water because it was using a puddle of water from irrigation at the elementary school. Thanks to Arthur Sissman who helped me get a total of 45 species and 407 total birds.

A photo I captured this morning at Naples Lakes CC where I work. The eagles appear huge against the flags.

Found some nice warblers at Bow Line Park in Naples this evening. This is a little neighborhood pocket park with really nice Live Oaks. Best of all the branches are low hanging so it helps bring the birds down to eye level. It's close to the coast so sometimes you'll catch good migrants. No big numbers but a nice variety - Black-throated Blue, Worm-eating, American Redstart, Yellow-throated and N. Parula.
Later driving down Mooring Line Dr. I had a Merlin perched on top of an apartment building.
Earlier I stopped at Freedom Park just before the line of showers came through. The birding was so slow I was reduced to taking photos of Viceroy butterflies.

Went on a pelagic trip with the McQuades yesterday. Sometimes you have to go out in a boat to get those rarities you can't get elsewhere. Got two Lifer birds - Brown Noddy and Masked B***y. My pics aren't great, using a point and shoot and it was a little rough in spots. But had a great time.

Stopped at wet field along 41 this morning.

Been getting bugged by facebook since I haven't posted anything lately. So here's a couple of pictures from this morning at Oil Well Road and County Line Road in Collier

[04/15/15]   Had a tiny little Killdeer this morning on the golf course. Of course Mom Killdeer was doing her best broken wing display

[03/25/15]   Had a fun time this morning leading a group of fifteen birders at Hole In the Wall golf club in Naples. Wonderful opportunity to teach the attendees about the value of the Audubon Cooperative Certified course. Great habitat for the center of Naples proper. Had 27 species total with the best birds being Black-crowned Night Heron and a young Bald Eagle.

[01/19/15]   Also I'll be giving a couple of presentations about using native plants to attract birds. First one is on Jan. 31st at Wilderness Country Club. The second one is for the Naples Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society on April 14th.
Maybe I'll see you there.

[01/19/15]   Have a couple of dates coming up.
First up I'll be leading the birding tour on Saturday for the Audubon of the Western Everglades trip to Tiger Tail Beach. Here's the listing - Tigertail Lagoon, Marco Island
Saturday, January 24, 2015 7:30AM-11:00AM
Tigertail Beach is usually full of shore birds feeding on the mud flats. Non resident fees will apply without a beach permit parking pass. We will walk along the edge of the lagoon. Sometimes it’s wet, so wear appropriate shoes, hats and sun protection. Bring water to drink also.
We will view shorebirds at low tide feeding along the lagoon. Long pants helpful if we need to walk through tall grasses.
Directions: Meet at Tigertail Beach Parking lot. Take Collier Blvd. south over Jolly Bridge in Marco , to Kendall Dr., turn right. Turn left on Hernando Dr. Park is in front of you. Fees apply if no Collier County Beach parking permit. Trip Leader: Keith Laakkonen has asked me to sub in for him since he'll be out of town.

[12/18/14]   Had a wonderful time leading a group of birders from the Audubon of the Western Everglades on Saturday, December 13th at the new Greenway Park in Naples. We had a lovely day and saw 37 species. Highlight of the day were a couple of House Finches and a very cooperative couple of Bald Eagles that sat and watched us pass about 30 feet away. Total ebird list is below.

[02/15/14]   We had a wonderful day of birding on Feb. 10th as twelve members of Naples Lakes CC joined me for a two hour tour. We saw a total of 39 species! The tour was off to a great start when we found 5 species, including two different woodpeckers, in the parking lot. Both the Red-bellied Woodpecker and Northern Flicker were utilizing the street lights to advertise for new mates. Next we explored the lakes along holes 9 and 8 and found many wading species. A juvenile Bald Eagle gave us great views off the driving range lake and later two adults flew over. We wrapped up the tour by visiting the wooded area off of hole 16.Here a Common Yellowthroat warbler peeked out among the alligator flag. Everyone had a great time and all are looking forward to our next outing on March 10th. A complete list of all the birds we saw is listed below.

[02/01/14]   This morning we had another great tour at Naples Heritage. Despite worries about fog, it turned out to be a great day. Lots of nice birds today and a really great view of an otter playing on the 13th hole. We looked and looked for purple martins but didn't see any on the nest boxes yet. However, as I packed up to leave I did hear and then see a martin fly overhead. Watch those nest boxes, they should be moving in any day.
Here's a list of the birds we saw today:

I led another group of birders on Jan. 13th, this time at Naples Lakes CC where I am second assistant superintendent. We had a small but lively group and had a great time looking for birds and other wildlife around the course. A complete bird list is listed below. Perhaps the best sighting though was a River Otter basking and eating on the bank of the driving range lake. One of the members sent some of her photos she took during the tour.

As a result of winning the FANN native landscape design competition last year, I picked up a client in Fort Lauderdale. He wanted an all native yard with decreased maintenance and water use. I did a design for him and he had it installed. He sent me an after picture and told me he also was able to get it certified by Broward county as a naturescape. See the before and after photos below.

[08/17/13]   Led a group from the Collier County Audubon Society on a birding tour this morning at Sugden Regional Park in Naples. We had a group of 8 and birded for 3 hours. Highlight of the day was a Hooded Warbler first sighted by Jill Furman. We couldn't get a picture but everyone had very good looks at him. For those familiar with the park he was in the area by the big oak with the bench. A beautiful male in full breeding plumage. Other birds of interest were a Red-eyed Vireo, several Tree Swallows a very photogenic Green Heron. The full list is posted below. We saw a total of 32 species while walking around and we able to add some Chimney Swifts and a juvenile Bald Eagle after some of the group had left.
Earlier in the day I birded a little at a wet field east of 951 on Hiway 41. Lots of waders here with Sandhill Cranes, Woodstorks, Limpkins and Roseate Spoonbills. Best birds were 2 Snail Kites hawking over the field. Unfortunately, no shorebirds yet.
