While racing at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds dates all the way back to 1904 (originally on a dirt track built for horse racing), what you see in this construction-era photo represents the massive 1957–1958 modernization.

Local racing promoters and the state fair board realized that the dirt track could no longer support the heavy, fast stock cars of the post-war era. They undertook a massive engineering project to pave the track and reshape the grounds into a modern, high-banked asphalt oval.

The construction captured here laid the literal foundation for some of the biggest names in motorsports history. This very asphalt is where local heroes like Coo Coo Marlin and his son Sterling Marlin, Darrell Waltrip, and Bobby Hamilton cut their teeth in weekly racing before taking the national stage. Waltrip, in particular, dominated the track in the 1970s, winning multiple track championships.

Today, the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway stands as the second-oldest continually operating track in the United States. Photos like this offer a fascinating look back at the precise moment it evolved from a regional fairgrounds attraction into an iconic, historic cathedral of speed.

Take a close look at this mind-bending photo from 1899. No, it’s not an early Photoshop job—this structure actually existed, perched precariously over the cliffs of Lookout Mountain right here in Chattanooga.

While it looks like the ultimate high-anxiety vacation cottage, it was actually the Linn Photographic Gallery, a booming commercial photography studio built right onto Sunset Rock.
