Paul had a brief stint with the Nighthawks during the 87-88 season… and in one of the oddities of sports while preparing for a game against Moncton was told in the locker room he was traded to Moncton…he had to take off his Nighthawks uniform go down the hall to the Moncton dressing room, and put on a Moncton uniform… After the game, he then had to get back on the Nighthawks bus to go back to New Haven and get his personal belongings and meet up with Moncton…
Rest in peace, Paul

The NHL Alumni Association is deeply saddened to learn that Paul Boutilier has passed away at the age of 63.

A defenseman, Paul played major junior hockey with the QMJHL’s Sherbrooke Castors beginning in 1980, and was selected by the New York Islanders in the first round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Paul made his NHL debut later that year, skating in his first career game on October 31, 1981, with the Islanders at the Montreal Forum, later returning to Sherbrooke for the remainder of the season.

Paul split time between the NHL and the QMJHL during the 1982-83 season, appearing in 29 games for the Islanders, and scored his first NHL goal on November 18, 1982, at home at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Playing in his final season of major junior hockey, Paul served as team captain for the newly relocated Saint-Jean Castors. Paul joined the Islanders for the 1983 Stanley Cup Playoffs, appearing in two games as the Islanders captured the final of their four consecutive Stanley Cups.

After 213 regular-season games with the Islanders from 1981 to 1986, Paul would go on to play for the Boston Bruins and Minnesota North Stars the following season, and later for the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets, respectively.

From Sydney, Nova Scotia, Paul returned to his home province after the conclusion of his playing career, accepting a position as an assistant coach for Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, serving in the role from 1991 to 1993 before being promoted to head coach, a position he held until 1997.

With a wealth of knowledge and experience, Paul later served in a multitude of coaching and front office positions across the collegiate, junior, and professional levels of hockey.

Internationally, Paul proudly represented Canada on multiple occasions and at both the junior and senior levels, highlighted by a gold medal at the 1982 World Junior Hockey Championships.

We send our deepest condolences to Paul’s family, friends, and former teammates during this incredibly difficult time.

This post from Swift hockey hits the nail on the head….this is what Hockey Night in New Haven’s mission is!! Not only have we taught and equipped(with support from the NY Rangers)hundreds of inner city kids the game but last month we donated over 800 pieces of street/roller hockey equipment to the 42 elementary and middle schools of New Haven….next month we begin building an outdoor street/roller rink we donated at East Shore Park in the Morris Cove section of New Haven…. And with the support of the New Haven Police Activity League, Special Olympics and the New Haven Parks and Rec and Board of Education departments, they’ll be programs at the rink all summer inclusive of not only hockey but basketball, lacrosse, soccer and other activities will take place there…. So thank you Swift Hockey for putting an exclamation point on our mission!!!

We’re proud to say that Hockey Night in New Haven just delivered almost 800 pieces of floor hockey equipment to the 42 schools in New Haven and within the next few weeks will train all gym teachers at each school the game of hockey so when the kids put a hockey stick in their hand, they’ll understand the game… We feel that the game of ice hockey has priced itself out of many demographics… It is our mission to try to get hockey sticks in as many kids hands as we can that can’t afford to play ice hockey so they can learn the rules, the game and the skills to play… Once they do, it is our hope that they decide to lace up skates and take their skills to the ice …we are determined to follow these kids through their career and for those that can make a high school team we’ll be there if they can’t afford the equipment so they can continue… and by this summer we’ll have some great news to offer about letting these kids continue their hockey skills…
