May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month, and the Motorcycle Awareness Campaign (MAC), as it does year-round, joins the National High-way Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Louisiana Highway Safety Com-mission (LHSC) in reminding motorists that motorcyclists have the same rights on the road as any other motorist. They are small and can be difficult to see.

The Motorcycle Awareness Campaign is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to promote awareness and safety of motorcyclists on roadways. MAC’s goal is to continue to reduce the number of crashes in which a motorist violates the right-of-way of a motorcyclist. Data from LSU’s Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety (CARTS) reveal that the number of fatalities involving motorcycles dropped a full 25% in 2024 over the previous year. “This downward trend is definitely good news, but MAC’s work will not be done until that number reaches zero,” says MAC president Bob Courtney.

MAC contributes by getting our message, “Please Watch for Motorcycles”, in front of drivers while they are driving. MAC uses bright yellow yard signs, bumper stickers, and billboards. The message is also conveyed in TV and radio Public Service Announcements, and on official Louisiana license plates. In addition, MAC is teaming up with the Eagle Wings Motorcycle Association during the weekend of May 8-10 at the I-10 west bound Louisiana Welcome Center. MAC yard signs, bumper stickers, and other free materials will be available, while supplies last.

According to Courtney, “As the weather gets warmer the number of motorcycles on the road increases dramatically. May is a perfect time to remind motorists to make an extra effort to actively watch for motorcycles.”
