🤯Meditation is such an important practice and a way for us to learn more about ourselves, be present, and to work with the mind so that we can hopefully breakfree from the mind's constant control over us at least at times.
Here’s a quick story about how I think my meditation practice helped me recently.
🥨 About two weeks ago, after my cat Pretzel was killed, I was overcome with anger and sadness. More anger and more sadness than I’ve had in a long time. I still sat to meditate each day after, but my mind was all over the place. I don’t think I had a single conscious breath for days. Hell, I was instructing people in my classes to be present, but I just couldn’t do it myself. It wasn't until 4 days later during our before dinner prayer/meditation that I realized that I had been so overcome with anger that I had not been present in most aspects of my life for days. I began to cry, I began to release some of that anger but I also began to feel grateful for these practices that have allowed me to find presence. Before my meditation practice, I’m certain I would have been caught up in the “movie of me” (as Ram Dass calls it) for much longer. Because I have a fairly consistent practice (abhyāsa) I was able to slow down enough to start to see things as they truly are and not the way my mind (conditioned by all of my past) wanted me to. I took control of my mind and that’s what meditation does…at least at times…at least for me.

We will offer 7 morning meditation classes in this series. Each 30 minute session will include a centering practice, a guided meditation primarily focused on the breath, the body, or a phrase, and end with a final reflection or thought of the day.
