Range Safety Tip: Footwear on the Range
Proper footwear is an often-overlooked safety factor.
Closed-toe shoes with firm uppers protect against hot brass, dropped equipment, and uneven terrain. Sandals, open-top shoes, or soft fabric footwear leave feet vulnerable.
Shoes with stable soles also improve balance and movement, particularly on gravel or outdoor ranges.
Good footing contributes to safe posture, stable stance, and overall confidence during training.

Range Safety Tip: Eye Protection Coverage
Not all safety glasses provide equal protection.
Effective range eye protection should wrap or extend to protect from the sides as well as the front. Debris or fragments can approach from multiple angles during live fire.
Look for eyewear labeled ANSI Z87 or Z87+, indicating tested impact resistance. Clear lenses are appropriate for most conditions; tinted lenses may help in bright outdoor light.
Comfort matters — shooters are more likely to keep protection on consistently when it fits well and does not shift during movement.
Reliable eye protection is a simple step that prevents serious injury.

Range Safety Tip: Managing Hot Brass — and Why It Matters
Hot brass is a normal part of live‑fire training, but how we react to it is what keeps everyone safe. In 2016, a tragic incident in Sarasota, Florida showed how a single moment of startled movement can have life‑changing consequences. A shooter felt hot brass go down his shirt, flinched, and unintentionally fired a round that struck his son behind him. It was a heartbreaking reminder that you must never lose muzzle discipline — even for a second.
At Wild Geese Training, we emphasize preparation, awareness, and calm handling so that unexpected distractions are prevented from turning into unsafe firearm movement.
Dress for Safety
Wearing the right clothing reduces the chance of brass contacting skin:
High‑neck shirts
Brimmed hats
Closed‑toe footwear
Avoid low‑cut tops or open collars
These small choices prevent big problems.
If Hot Brass Hits You
If brass lands on you — or even goes down your shirt — remember:
Freeze the muzzle in a safe direction.
Keep your finger off the trigger.
Pause, breathe, and safely clear the brass.
Swatting, twisting, or jumping can sweep others with the muzzle or cause an unintended discharge.
Experienced Shooters Know the Secret
Minor distractions happen. Hot brass, wind, noise, debris — the key is staying calm and maintaining safe gun handling at all times. Good habits prevent bad outcomes.
Safety Is a Skill
We train to build confidence, not fear. With preparation and awareness, every shooter — new or experienced — can stay safe, focused, and in control.
Train smart. Stay safe. Protect your community.

Range Safety Tip: Proper Hearing Protection Fit
Hearing protection only works if it fits correctly.
Foam earplugs should be rolled tightly, inserted fully into the ear canal, and allowed to expand for a proper seal. When worn correctly, most of the plug should sit inside the ear, not protruding outward.
Over-the-ear protection should fully seal around the ear with no gaps from hair, eyewear arms, or hat brims. Even small gaps significantly reduce protection.
Many shooters benefit from double protection (earplugs plus earmuffs), especially in indoor or high-noise environments.
Good hearing protection preserves lifelong hearing and reduces fatigue, making training safer and more comfortable.
Questions about selecting or fitting hearing protection are always welcome.

Range Safety Tip: Dress for Safety and Comfort
Whether you’re brand new to the range or have years of experience, proper attire and protective gear make a real difference in safety, comfort, and confidence.
Clothing matters.
Closed-toe shoes, high-neck or crew-neck shirts, and a brimmed hat help protect against hot brass and debris. Avoid low-cut tops, sandals, or loose-flowing clothing.
Eye and ear protection are essential, and we provide eye and ear protection free of charge to anyone attending a class!
Quality eye protection shields against particles and unexpected impacts. For range use, eye protection should be ANSI Z87-rated, indicating it meets established impact-resistance standards. Properly fitted hearing protection prevents permanent hearing damage — even a single exposure to gunfire can cause injury.
I strongly recommend electronic hearing protection for most shooters. Affordable models are widely available and allow normal conversation and instruction to be heard clearly while automatically reducing dangerous impulse noise. This makes learning easier and the range experience more comfortable, especially for new shooters.
These small choices create a safer, more comfortable learning environment for everyone on the range.
What range safety tips do you always follow, or wish you’d known earlier? Questions are always welcome.

Very interesting discussion on planning security and safety for houses of worship. Lots of good take-aways here.
Attacks on churches have been in the news lately and this week we revisit an article that was written a year ago on that exact topic.
09/16/2025
The recent tragedy in Houston involving 11-year-old Julian Guzman should serve as a wake-up call for every gun owner. Undoubtedly there are background details not covered in the news reporting, but this incident appears to be a textbook example of what can happen when fi****ms owners don’t get training in the lawful use of lethal force.
The reality is this: Most people think fi****ms training is just about marksmanship and accuracy. They're missing the bigger picture. The most critical part of responsible fi****ms ownership is understanding WHEN you can legally use deadly force.
This isn't just about accuracy - it's about knowing whether you should be pulling the trigger at all. An Army veteran allegedly shot a child in the back over a doorbell prank. That's not a threat requiring lethal force - that's a tragic lack of understanding about the legal boundaries of self-defense.
Louisiana's Constitutional Carry law gives you the right to carry, but it doesn't give you a law degree. If you think owning guns means you automatically know when to use them legally, you're setting yourself up for disaster.
Real fi****ms training covers threat assessment, when deadly force is legally justified, de-escalation to avoid violent encounters, and the legal consequences of getting it wrong.
Don't let Constitutional Carry fool you into thinking training is optional. Your understanding of the law could be the difference between protecting your family and facing murder charges.
Train smart. Stay legal. Stay free.
