Do you focus on sprint mechanics during training? Yes/No?

The Hidden Key to Sprinting Faster: Ground Contact Time

When you watch an elite sprinter, what stands out? Their speed, power, and efficiency. But one of the biggest secrets behind their performance is something you might not notice: ground contact time (GCT).

Ground contact time is the split-second your foot touches the ground during a sprint. The faster you can push off the ground, the faster you move forward. For elite athletes, GCT is often less than 0.1 seconds per stride.

Here’s how you can reduce your GCT and unlock new levels of speed:

1ļøāƒ£ Build Explosive Strength
Every sprint starts with power. Exercises like plyometrics (think box jumps, depth jumps, and bounds) and Olympic lifts (power cleans, snatches) help you generate maximum force in minimal time.

2ļøāƒ£ Master Sprint Mechanics
Efficiency is everything. Proper posture, a high knee drive, and correct foot placement all work together to minimize wasted energy and maximize speed.

Quick Tip: Land on the ball of your foot and push off quickly—spending too much time on your heel slows you down.

3ļøāƒ£ Practice Sprint-Specific Drills
Drills like A-skips, B-skips, and wicket runs can help you develop the rhythm and control needed to reduce ground time while maintaining stride efficiency.

Why It Matters
In sprints, a tenth of a second is the difference between winning gold or settling for silver. Reducing GCT isn’t just for track stars—it’s a critical skill for football players, soccer athletes, and anyone relying on top-end speed.

Take Action:
Start adding explosive drills and sprint mechanics work into your training. Need guidance? DM us to learn how we can create a personalized speed program to help you dominate.

Acceleration: The Key to Outperforming the Competition

When it comes to speed, most athletes think about top-end velocity. But in sports, it’s rarely about how fast you are over 100 meters—it’s about how quickly you can get to 5 or 10 meters. That’s where acceleration becomes your ultimate advantage.

Acceleration isn’t just about moving forward—it’s about generating maximum force in the shortest amount of time. Here’s how you can master it:

1ļøāƒ£ Sprint Drills for the First 10-20 Yards
Practicing short sprints with a focus on explosive starts will train your body to apply force more effectively. Sled sprints are particularly effective—they teach you to drive forward with power while reinforcing proper mechanics.

2ļøāƒ£ Powerful Starts from Any Position
Acceleration doesn’t always start with a perfect stance. Practicing starts from kneeling, seated, or even lying-down positions will help you develop versatility for any game situation.

3ļøāƒ£ Strength Meets Power
Acceleration relies on your ability to generate force quickly. Exercises like squats, deadlifts, and power cleans improve your strength, while plyometrics build the speed of force application.

The Science of Acceleration
Acceleration requires both horizontal force (driving forward) and optimal mechanics (a low, powerful body position). The first few strides are critical—each one should maximize your propulsion while maintaining balance and control.

šŸ’” Pro Tip: Keep your center of gravity low, and use strong arm swings to create momentum.

Why It Matters
From soccer to basketball to football, athletes who can reach top speed faster have the competitive edge. Acceleration is a skill that can—and should—be trained systematically.
