In 1999, former Carolina Panthers WR Rae Carruth became the center of one of the darkest cases in NFL history.
Carruth was convicted of conspiracy to commit m*rder after prosecutors said he helped orchestrate the sh**ting of his pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams, in Charlotte. Adams managed to call 911 after being shot, and her baby, Chancellor Lee Adams, survived after an emergency C-section.
Chancellor was born with permanent disabilities caused by the trauma of the attack, while Cherica d*ed weeks later from her injuries.
Carruth was later found hiding in the trunk of a car after fleeing, convicted in 2001, and sentenced to 18 years in prison. He was released in October 2018.
