SOS Triathlon

SOS Triathlon The Survival of the Shawangunks is a triathlon held in the town of New Paltz, New York.

It is unusual in that it has seven transitions among the three racing modalities, compared to the two that are typical for the sport (switching from swimming to bicycling, and then from bicycling to running). Self-sufficiency in this race that culminates with a thousand-foot climb to the finish line is celebrated; participants must carry their running shoes as they swim and may only have a single person assist them during the competition. The course contains the following:
Leg 1: 30 mile bike
Leg 2: 4.5 mile trail run
Leg 3: 1.1 mile swim of Lake Awosting
Leg 4: 5.5 mile trail run
Leg 5: .75 mile swim of Lake Minnewaska
Leg 6: 8 mile trail run
Leg 7: .5 mile swim of Lake Mohonk
Leg 8: .7 mile trail up to top of Mohonk Mountain
