Save our gyms, Gov. Cuomo: Learning lessons from other states, we can reopen safely This week, New York City joined the rest of the state moving into Phase 4 of its post-coronavirus reopening, with one glaring omission: Fitness businesses statewide have been moved out of reopening phases indefinitely. To my knowledge, there has been no mention of the industry in Gov. Cuomo’s pres...

Last week marked the end of our eight year tenancy at 153 W. 27th St. All group classes such as Pilates and martial arts currently fall under Phase Four of the reopening process in NYC which will be months from now. We couldn't financially justify paying our normal rent on an empty space and our landlords have not been willing to make any accommodations.

Marimba and I opened our doors in 2012. With the generous support of numerous wonderful people, far too many to name, we were able to consistently grow our studio and create a space for learning, fitness, health, calm, and friendship. In addition to our regular group classes and one-on-one sessions, we had the opportunity to host wonderful teachers such as Masters Luo De Xiu and Tim Cartmell for martial arts and Christine Wright, Wendy Amos, and Sarita Allen, among others, for Pilates and movement.

Since the shutdown, both of us have been able to shift many of our sessions to an online venue which we had never previously considered. Surprisingly, we have found this mode offers certain advantages. While obviously not the same as in-person sessions, it has allowed many people to be more consistent in their training and develop greater degrees of self-reliance and resilience in their discipline. This brings to mind the words of one of my heroes, the venerable Ajahn Sumhedo who in many of his Dhamma talks speaks of the impediment of looking for ideal and refined conscious experiences in meditation practice. He advises us that practice is here and now, adapting to present conditions and working within the limitations to further our development.

The future is always uncertain. Although this is the end of the studio at its present location, we hope to be able to reopen as soon as possible, ideally in an even better space. Both Marimba and I want to thank everyone throughout the years for helping us make the studio a reality.
