It's the End of the Century — CITY COACH | NYC's Best Running and Triathlon Coach - Couch to 5K & 10K, Marathon, Triathlon, and Corporate Wellness 06/22/2024

Once upon a time we used to ride a century in Prospect Park every year on the Summer Solstice.

It's the End of the Century — CITY COACH | NYC's Best Running and Triathlon Coach - Couch to 5K & 10K, Marathon, Triathlon, and Corporate Wellness Though it has been one of my favorite rides of the year since its inception in 2006, I've decided to put the annual No Sleep 'til Brooklyn Prospect Park century out to pasture. We had a lot of fun with the event, which included 30 mind-numbing but fun laps of the park. We managed to get the ride in

Our friends at NEW YORK TRIATHLON are celebrating their 40th anniversary of hosting races, and it (predictably) got me feeling nostalgic.

Pictured above is Christopher Bergland winning the Brooklyn Biathlon, circa 1990. It was his first multisport race, and to this day, one of my proudest moments as a coach. Back then it was a 3.36 mile run in Prospect Park, a 20 mile ride along Ocean Parkway and the Belt Parkway, and a second 3.36 mile run. Christopher and another racer were neck-and-neck for the first run and the ride, and then Christopher pulled away on the second run. Afterward he said he remembered me telling him that one day he would race his physical equal and the win would go to the racer who was willing to suffer more. Considering that Christopher went on to win a *triple* ironman distance race, run 153.76 miles in 24 hours on a treadmill, and finish top-5 at the 135-mile Badwater Ultra, I think it's clear Christopher was not afraid of a little suffering.

The Brooklyn Bi - now finally known as a duathlon (because that's what it is) was also my first race back in 1988. More importantly City Coach athletes including Ross McGraw, Amy May, Nicole Falcaro, and Nicole Sin Quee all won Brooklyn throughout the years, and Jeannine Bardo, Leanne Elisha, Edie Perkins, Jessica Purcell Zebrak, Brian Sica, Emily Kindlon, Yvonne Kingon, Nathanael Horne, Johanna Bjorken, and more made it to the podium there.

Who else has raced Brooklyn?
