This isn’t about criticism.
It’s about pushing artists to practice.
Artists need to create… a LOT. The iterative process allows them to refine their expression - they don’t just wait for the inspiration and technique to magically materialize -it’s the hundreds of drafts that form the masterpiece. A true artist is never “done”. But every iteration is a work of art.

West Coast Swing is creative — but creativity grows from repetition.

Technique.
Timing.
Connection.
Musical awareness.

Art happens on the floor.
But it’s built in the practice room.
So what have you been iterating today?

I always have so much fun in the Invitational 3-way Crossover Jack & Jill at !
Each of us gets paired with a pro from another dance style (LindyHop, WCS, Rockabilly Jive, Blues, Balboa, Boogie Woogie)
I was lucky to draw this amazing Lindy Hop pro who has such delicious SwingOuts I would have been happy just doing those for the whole time!

This was the serious dance. Stay tuned for the last song where we let loose and got silly!

After 2 serious dances in LindyHop and Rockabilly Jive, it was time to let loose with the “West Coast Swing” part of this Crossover J&J at

My Lindy Hop pro partner was soooo game to play “Yes, and” with me to continue the floorwork theme! It as so much fun it literally took my breath away!

We got so much great feedback on this workshop from , right in the middle of the Groove Challenge!

Because it’s so common for WCS dancers to learn patterns before learning dance skills, they develop a “pattern bias”, where if they’re not doing a pattern, they feel lost or awkward.
But GROOVE is part of the origins and character of the dance that ALL Westies should learn at the same time as patterns.

Pausing at the end of patterns to insert grooves is great, but certain patterns set up groove opportunities beautifully. We call them “UMBRA” patterns. Here are just a few!

This is fully explained with several examples in the Swing Literacy Dancer Development Program
We have a complete practice blueprint on this topic, split into 5 stages of development inside our Momentum membership.

I absolutely love playing with momentum and counterbalance! On a fundamental level, it feels authentic and feels like we’re working with physics instead of fighting it. WCS just feels empty without it.
But on a high-level like this with Sean, I feel like we can access a level of synchronicity, creativity, and teamwork in a whole different realm. It’s a superpower, and my leader becomes my Avenger teammate.

You don’t need championship goals to benefit from choreography.

In West Coast Swing, routines aren’t about performance — they’re about training your musicality, timing, and body control in a deeper way. Assigning movement to music builds awareness, sharpens choices, and expands your creative range.

Choreography doesn’t limit your dancing — it improves how you improvise.

Behind every strong West Coast Swing dancer is a foundation you rarely see:
Practice.
Feedback.
Late nights.
Competitions.
Corrections.
Patience.
That spotlight and podium moment is visible.
The work underneath usually isn’t.
