No matter where you are in your yoga journey, techniques for longevity and engaging with the practice in a dynamic, well-rounded way are always worthwhile. Over this weekend-long training, you will be immersed in metaphor and imagination to broaden your frame of reference for yoga and develop an engaging experience of embodiment.
We will start by learning the foundational maps of Katonah Yoga®, which explore the mechanics of physical postures, the Taoist philosophy of the energetic body, personal narratives, and much more.
Building upon these maps as tools, we will take them into the weekend to thoughtfully engage with our physical practice & discuss how to make a life-long yoga practice sustainable. We will do this via the formality of the asana practice and explore the ideas held within metaphors of Katonah Yoga®.
Finally, we will conclude with a day of looking at the more subtle aspects of the practice. A complete asana class will lead us to explore the theory and mechanics of breath practice and techniques for meditation.
All are welcome: beginners and experienced practitioners. Yoga is for everyone.
We will cover:
· Katonah yoga® techniques for functional postures
· Imaginative embodiment practices during asana and breathwork
· Katonah yoga’s theory: the magic square, the seasonal cycle, and metaphor of “the body as a house” to awaken a rich internal experience.

Join Shaina on the mat to raise funds and awareness for The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) in honor of her father, Robert, who passed away from complications due to Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) in 2020. FTD is the most common form of dementia for people under 60 and presents different symptoms, often leading to lengthy or incorrect diagnosis. AFTD aims to raise awareness, fund research, as well as provide support and advocacy for those impacted. Shaina found AFTD integral to her journey with FTD as it brought together a community of support during some very difficult years. The classes will be centered in the Katonah Yoga practice, with some anecdotal tunes and stories along the way to honor Robert’s memory. All of Shaina’s proceeds will go to AFTD. Can’t make it? In this workshop, we’ll start with poses that open the shoulders, chest, and frontal hips to prepare for backbends. Using props like chairs, blocks, and bolsters, you’ll first practice supported backbends before progressing to more active, unsupported ones. The imprints created in supported poses will help you find greater ease and freedom in unsupported backbends.

In yoga asana practice we awaken awareness from our outer anatomical structure (arms. legs, shoulders and hips) to the inner structural body (skull, spine and ribcage.)
In standing poses it is essential the legs align with the hip sockets and arms with the shoulder joint. When these actions are done well we feel great physical benefit from the standing poses. It becomes clear the power of our limbs is essential because standing poses require a lot of energy. The codependency between the lower trunk and the upper trunk becomes evident in a standing pose.
In the Iyengar method we access a lot of communication between outer body and inner power in the standing poses. Working with breath awareness in standing poses we become familiar with exhalative breath in the pelvic area sustained by the legs and inhalative breath in the chest sustained by the arms. It is said that good health and stable mind come from clarifying these two “winds”. Even more fascinating and beneficial is when the exhalation in the pelvic area becomes the root for the inhalation and the inhalation in the chest becomes a rain cloud source for the exhalation. This can definitely be learned in asanas! The Sanskrit terminology for these two energies or winds is Apana Vayu located in the pelvis and Prana Vayu located in the chest.
After exploring the standing poses, we will do sitting poses, inversions and /or supine poses to balance and end our practice.
This workshop is for all yoga students who want to explore breath awareness within the action and alignment of standing poses.
Familiarity with the standing poses is required.

In Chinese theory, Spring raises the energy of the liver, our reservoir of creativity and renewal. This initiates our vision, expression, and the will to bloom from the depths of Winter’s wisdom. The element of Spring is wood, which can be flexible yet resilient, and it is up to us to cultivate an ecosystem of practices that support our growth.
We use Katonah Yoga Restorative shapes in combination with overtone-rich sounds to support the breath with postures that use formal setups, hands-on adjustments, and props as boundaries to scaffold physical and emotional structure. The instruments join with this dynamic environment, guiding attention deeper into the form. When the mind and body connect in this way, breath and energy move effortlessly, evoking ease and safety, and inviting new layers of psycho-somatic release.
Each participant will receive a uniquely personal experience guided by three facilitators. Chemistry and neurology transform in each posture supported by blocks, blankets, and straps; accompanied by chimes, tuning forks, singing bowls, and gongs. Emerge from the class feeling elevated, energized, and empowered towards your internal guidance.

With dynamic movement and strong breathwork, we will awaken the power of Kundalini energy. Then, with mudras and inner locks — or bandhas —we will channel this heightened pranic energy for inner radiance and higher consciousness, finishing with “Meditation into Ecstasy,” an important breath meditation for the 6th Chakra wisdom center. “Celestial Communications,” a way to chant with movements and mudras, will also be taught.
All levels are welcome; beginners and advanced students will receive helpful tips for an effective home practice. If most of your yoga studies have been about asana, this workshop will round out your practice. The « power of the breath » will help your life like nothing else!

Whether the hips are tight and blocked or loose and unstable, without the proper tone and structure to the hip socket, our experience in a variety of asanas can become limited or confused. Just think about the load placed on the hips in poses such as Ardha Chandrasana and Virabhadrasana III. In this workshop we explore how to connect our legs into the hip socket to strengthen and stabalize that area in a relaxed and progressive manner. We will break down the more advanced asanas to reveal hidden or weak parts that are not participating, allowing you to explore the range and subtle changes within the hips that eventually bring you effortlessly into more advanced poses.

Join Cari, Yiming & Adrian for an enriching seasonal experience, as we utilize diverse tools and techniques to support dropping into deep states of embodiment.
In Chinese theory, Winter descends us into the depths of the kidneys, our reservoir energy of substantiation, reflection, and quietude, as well as our inner listening, intuition, and wisdom. The element of Winter is water, which can get frozen with fear, and it is up to us to transform its character and keep it fluid.
