TONIGHT is the last official skate of the WNS season, which means it’s also our HALLOWEEN COSTUME SKATE! 🎃👻

Let’s get dressed up and keep the vibes high by rolling together in unison and safety. ✨🌈

This will be a pretty chill route, but as always you MUST be able to skate, stop, etc on your own. 👈

Based on the past few weeks, it seems we have to spell out some ✅DOs and ❌DON’Ts of WNS.

This isn’t an exhaustive list of good and bad behavior, but it puts into stronger terms the behavior that will permit us to survive and thrive for the rest of this season and those to come.

• We’re a social skate, not a race. There’s no prize for first place, so stay behind the WNS staff leader.
• Respect each other by skating safely and competently. If you wanna go HAM, do it some other time. 👈
• You must be able to stop, slow, turn, etc. all on your own.

Hey skaters!

Last week was not the season opener that any of us wanted. 😥 We thought it might be fine, but we also heard many concerns about safety, particularly for those joining us for the first time.

On the subject of caution and general operational “stuff”, here are a few reminders…
• Our season officially runs April through the end of October, and meets the same time and place: 7:45pm, south steps of Union Square.
• If the weather’s good, we’ll be skating (no need to ask 😏). If it’s iffy, we’ll share updates and have a final decision by 6pm (we know some people have to travel, and need as much notice as possible).
• Always skate within your ability and at your own risk. We do our best to make things run smoothly, but navigating wet spots, rough roads, hills, etc may all be necessary.
• Please abide by staff instructions, such as clearing a lane for cars and not blocking roads or sidewalks when we regroup.
• Stay behind the week’s leader and don’t push the pace, which spreads us out too much and hurts the slower skaters. Also be mindful of the space others need to stop, turn, etc and don’t snake 🐍 people!

☝️ Especially important: we strive to be a safe, welcoming, positive space for skaters of all kinds. Harassment has no place in the skating community, and we urge anyone to seek out a staff member if you witness or experience harassment of any kind.

Sorry folks, we *really* wanted to skate tonight, but it’s only getting wetter and because of that we’re rescheduling our 2023 season opener for next week. But if anyone DOES plan to skate in the wet/rain, feel free to comment below to let others know.

Last week and all season, there were simply TOO MANY wonderful costumes, moments, feelings and miles to share in a single post. 🥹💕 But we would have NOTHING to share if not for the phenomenal photography of , which he shared with us week after week (check our page for all the pics).

We also want to thank the many of you who create, post and tag WNS in your own content, to help spread the word about this little thing we do each week from April through October. 🙏🏽

The staff of WNS is SO SO grateful to carry on the tradition of bringing together such an enthusiastic, skilled, and positive group of people. While no skating is without risk, we strive to provide a safe and welcoming environment for skaters of all types and backgrounds. With your support and feedback, we look forward to continuing that work in 2023. 🔮

Remember that there are still other skates going on ( and more!), but until WNS resumes in April: skate safe and have fun out there!

For 200-plus skaters in New York City, skating isn't just a throwback to the '90s Wednesday Night Skate has zipped through the streets of New York since the 1990s but really picked up steam during the pandemic. These days, 200-300 skaters participate in the weekly event.

The sun hasn’t set on our season just yet! 💫 You can still dress normal tonight, as 🎃 next Wednesday is our annual Halloween costume skate. 👻
