I had an amazing opportunity to visit Japan (thank you Rich). During that trip I was able to visit and train at different Dojo’s on mainland Japan and Okinawa. One of those amazing experiences was being able to visit the grave of Chōjun Miyagi, Founder of Goju-Ryu Karate and pay my respects.

On June 15th my students presented me with an award. It was such an unexpected and humbling experience. As instructors, we try to pass on the tradition of our art to future generations (as our sensei’s have done for us) with the hope that it will improve and better their lives and the lives of people around them, without ever expecting anything in return. The reward is seeing them grow and develop into the best versions of themselves and go on to accomplish great things in the future. I’m very proud of all of you for the hard work, time, effort and energy you have all put into improving your selves.

Everyone should have an opportunity to enjoy every activity or sport they wish to experience. Adopting an activity or sport to meet the needs of each individual is a skill each trainer, sensei or coaching should possess. I encourage anyone who teaches to explore adaptive practices in their sport.

Another year assisting the club officers who represented the Martial Arts Club at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Every semester all the clubs have an opportunity to setup a booth at the involvement fair. During a two day period any student at the college has an opportunity to meet representatives from every club in the college and join whichever activity, hobby or passion they want to participate in. This is an amazing event for all the students. Follow your dreams everyone.
