The Dominican Republic black history that is rarely talked about and never taught in DominicanRepublic schools.
Meet one of the heroes of Dominican Republic, the Honorable Sebastian Lemba, a slave from Congo π¨π©, Africa, who ended up in Dominican Republic during the brutal Transatlantic Slave Trade.
SebastiΓ‘n Lemba, also known as Juan SebastiΓ‘n Lemba Calembo. He was a prominent African maroon leader. He led a massive 15-year rebellion against Spanish colonial rule in Santo Domingo (modern-day Dominican Republic).
Let this history sink in: He led the first ever slave revolt in the Americas, from Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic is the first home of Africans in the whole of the Americas. He died in 1547/1548, in Dominican Republic.
His statue stands tall with pride in Santo Domingo, the capital city of Dominican Republic.
Please learn more and tell others about this amazing and brave African Dominican leader. May his soul continue to rest in peace. He was a true African Dominican (literally). Well done π«‘, son of the soilππ½π«Άπ½πͺπ½π©π΄ππ¨π©.

Fashion is not just about looking cute...π. It's also about making a statement... Revealing who you are. This is why you often see me in African attire, Dominican flag etc.... This was me, rocking my African print pants, at huge Dominican Republic Independence Day Celebration in the Bronx, New York, by .
I am who I am. An authentic and proud African, showing and spreading my love for Africa, all things African and the African Diaspora at large, wherever my steps lead me.... ππ½π©π΄π«Άπ½πππ½β¨οΈπ₯°.
When an African goes to a Dominican party π₯³... This happens... πππ½β¨οΈπ₯°.
Dancing merengue at a Dominican Party in the Bronx, New York City π½πΊπΈ. Apparently, I was a real "African Dominican" in my previous life...π€£π
... The African Dominican ancestors brought me back as a FULL African to handle business... If you know, you know!... Just half kidding, I think... π

Good vibes at Dominican Republic Independence Day Celebration π₯π₯³π©π΄π!
Dominicans in New York City embracing their African roots and heritage, FULLY, as they honor the life of Enerolisa NuΓ±ez βοΈπ! I LOVE IT! π₯°π«Άπ½.
Back story: On the morning of February 28th, 2026, I received the sad news of the passing away of Enerolisa NuΓ±ez - a Dominican music legend, while I was in New York City, celebrating Dominican Republic's Independence Day (February 27th).
May her soul rest in peace ππ½π«Άπ½βοΈ! May many more Dominicans like her, rise up and continue her legacy of preserving their rich African roots and heritage in Dominican Republic and all over the world, and against all odds. The beautiful thing is that, more and more Dominicans are embracing, celebrating and cherishing their African roots and heritage, as evident in this video taken in New York City, at a Dominican Party on February 28, 2026, when they received the news for Enerolisa NuΓ±ez passing away.
Palo, Los Congos, Salves etc., music and dance is not evil. It's Dominican in every sense of the word. To accept who you are fully is to HEAL and LOVE all of you.... Whoever told you that your African heritage, roots and ancestral celebrations were evil, LIED to you to keep you in bo***ge and to advance what's theirs.... Why is yours evil and theirs is not?.... Who did Africans colonize, "grape, delete" and wipe out of Dominican Republic?.... π€... Open your eyes, mind and educate yourself. Ignorance is no longer bliss in this day and age of advanced technology, online research and social media.... One Love β€οΈ π«Άπ½.
FYI: I'm saying this as a Christian βοΈ who loves my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who was by the way born in Africa and grew up in the Middle East.
Learning and acceptance is all about using wisdom, understanding and knowing who you are and where to set boundaries.... You shall know them by their fruits. I look at the heart, vibes and energy of EVERYTHING, first, before I pass judgement because that's where reality and the truth is revealed... Be wise ππͺπ½ππ½π«Άπ½.

Dominican Republic culture is Black History. Interestingly, February is Black History Month and February is also Dominican Republic Independence month (February 27th). How cool is that?! ππ€©π₯°π₯³.
As we get ready to celebrate Dominican Republic's Independence, with beautiful displays of Dominican culture, let's not forget that Dominican Culture is Black History. Love the culture; learn the history behind the culture ππ«Άπ½π©π΄β¨οΈ.

I love Palo / Los Congos music from the Dominican Republic π©π΄π. Not knowing the lyrics or understanding the song does not matter because you feel the annointing of the song and it gives you those beautiful goosebumps that only real music with SOUL can give you π₯°β¨οΈ.

Let me reintroduce myself.... I'm Valentina - the street bachatera. I was introduced to Bachata in 1996 when I moved to the USA πΊπΈ after living in London π¬π§ for some years. I first learned about the Dominican Republic and it's rich African heritage, evident through its music and dance, such as bachata, when I moved to Washington, DC, USA. I fell in love with the music and dance instantly.
I learned to dance bachata, in the streets of Washington, DC, by listening to the music, watching how it's danced and trying to dance it. Yes, I learned how to dance bachata by myself through observation and trial. The dance came instantly and naturally to me.
However, I did not learn how to dance bachata with fancy footwork decorations until November 2023 after my trip to Dominican Republic where I went to observe how people dance with footwork and then tried it out and practiced some more on my own when I got back home to Washington, DC.
August 2023 is when I became acquainted with the bachata studio world. My street bachata world and the bachata studio world met for the first time and I learned a lot and met many fellow bachata lovers πΊπ½π©π΄ππ½β¨οΈ during the bachata trip to Dominican Republic.
We all have different dance learning styles that work better and faster for us. Some of us learn better in the streets, by observation and trial, faking it until we make it.... I have never been taught how to dance bachata by anyone. We all learn differently. I prefer the natural, authentic, street bachata flow approach to learning any dance, where there are no dance rules, just you and the music authentically connecting as one, honoring the roots, the culture and the essence of the dance style (bachata). Bachata is one of my favorite dances in the world, although I can dance pretty much to any dance genre in the world because I LOVE music.
I love bachata because of its sensuality, and fun at the same time. I love the freedom to move how I want and feel. Bachata allows me the freedom to authentically be myself and more... πβ¨οΈππ½π₯°.
Stay tuned for more...
